Getting a dr's c-section rate?

Has anyone done this? What did you do, just call the office and ask for it?

In speaking with several different people, including doulas, I was under the impression that those numbers were readily available and you just had to call and ask for them.

I go to the largest women's clinic in the area, so I figured they'd be used to people calling and asking for that information.  I was quite wrong. I called on Thursday and got passed around from person to person, and everyone said, "I've never gotten this question before, I'm not sure how to get you that answer."  Then one girl finally said that the lady with that info was out of town til Monday, but she'd get the numbers and call me back. I just barely heard from her and she said that she was told I need to speak with my doctor about any concerns I have. WTF? I just want the c-section rate of my OB's back up doc!

I hear people regularly say, "That dr's c-section rate is 54%" or things along those lines, so now I'm really curious how they get this info.

  • As far as I know, you just have to ask the doctor directly and hope they give you an accurate and honest answer.  That's what I have done.  The OB who did my c/s had a rate of 25%, my VBAC OB had a c/s rate under 10% but only did low-risk pregnancies.  A CNM practice I checked out had a c/s rate of 12%.

  • I had the same experience as you.  I called the hospital and the clinic and just got passed around and around and left several messages for the "right" person with no return calls before giving up.  I have also just asked my OB directly and hoped she was giving me accurate information.
