3rd Trimester

stitches vs. staples

for c-section.  i will try to vbac but if i end up with a c sec again i was just wondering what you all think heals better?  i had stitches last time and i ended up with a keliod scar.  OB says she can do staples next time if i end in c sec instead of vbac.

Re: stitches vs. staples

  • My sil had a terrible time with her staples so I have requested stitches the last two times. I have had no problems with them.

  • I've read that keloids are unavoidable, depending on the person.  Some get them, some do not.

  • I had staples with my c/s and had no problems.  I asked my doc during my last pregnancy which was her preferred method, and she told me staples, but I can't remember why. At the time I was satisfied w/ her answer, so if I end up having another c/s this time (although I'm praying for a successful VBAC), I'm fine with staples again.

  • I believe my Dr does not staple or stitch I think he glues. My SIL just gave birth a few mths ago and they glued her. Not sure which one is better.

    I would rather choose stables.

  • I was glued. I had internal stitches, but they "superglued" me on the outside. It was really easy to take care of, I just had to make sure I patted it dry after every shower. I had no problems with it and my scar is almost non-existent. I am also hoping for a vbac, but if I end up with a repeat c/s, I hope my dr. uses glue again.
  • I had internal stitches and staples with both of my previous c-sections... there might have been some glue involved... This time around I have a different OB so I don't know what her game plan is. Maybe I should ask.

  • Staples are easier, more time-efficient and I believe cheaper for the doctors to use.  They will leave bigger scars, though.

Stitches are more precise, but are more inconvenient for doctors so they are rarely the "preferred method."

  • I had stitches and loved it- the scar is tiny and I healed quickly.  I think staples are the norm for my practice/hospital, because all of the other docs and nurses that rounded were very surprised I had stitches, and all commented that it would leave the best scar.

I had glue for a laproscopic surgery while I was pregnant, and thought it was great...those scars are a little funky because my stomach was expanding during the healing process, but it was really easy to take care of
