3rd Trimester

Chronic Cough?

I'm am now 36 weeks pregnant and for a few weeks now I have had the absolute WORST dry cough ever!  I have already been to the doctor and he basically said I just have to suffer through it because there are no safe meds to take for a cough during pregnancy.  The only remedy he really gave me was to drink hot tea with honey and lemon and take shots of honey and lemon.  And I've been sucking on cough drops constantly.  Nothing really seems to help much.  My lungs and abs have been hurting from all this coughing and it feels like I'm going to break a rib it gets so bad.  It's the worst at night and my poor husband has to hear it night after night.  Am I the only one with this problem?  Does anyone have any advice?  Please!!!!  Or sympathy for me, lol???

Re: Chronic Cough?

  • I had the same thing for 3 weeks and finally went to my regular dr. who said it's bronchitis and put me on the Z-Pak....Before that I was taking Riccola cough drops which my OB said was fine to take during pregnancy...feel better

  • Oh, I forgot to mention that my allergies and asthma are what is causing this!  Usually my asthma doesn't bother me except for when I am pregnant.  The coughing happened when I was pregnant with my son too, but it was only at night and not nearly as severe.  Plus I'm allergic to mold and the mold has been super bad because we have been getting tons of rain lately.
  • I have asthma with this pregnancy that is bad.  I have had a chronic cough for the entire pregnancy.  My regular dr told me to take my inhaler up to 4 x a day and then my naturalopathic dr said honey lemon tea will ease the pain in throat from all the coughing. Hope that helps.
