A week from today...

The girls start daycare. :( I am so bummed. It is coming up way too fast. I don't actually start back to work until the 31st, but I decided to send them for three days the week before I actually go back to work as kind of a breaking in period for all of us. I am really nervous about being away from Liana for such a long day. I know that I am incredibly lucky that I have been able to stay home with her for this long, but since Zoey never went to DC until she was over a year old, this feels like a whole new world to me -- having to deal with pumping and figuring out how many bottles to send, etc. I am starting to get really stressed about that aspect of it and worried that I won't be able to pump enough throughout the day, or that pumping is going to eat up all my non-teaching time at work when I should be planning, correcting, etc. Ugh, I just really don't want this maternity leave/summer vacation to end. :(

Re: A week from today...

  • I wish I could offer you some advice. But I have not had to deal with pumping and daycare.

I hope the transition goes well.

  • I'm sorry you're stressed. I hope it works out well for you. Pumping during work is never a piece of cake. It's hard to find the time, get all your stuff settled, then all cleaned up. Once you get into a routine it gets easier. Let me know if you have any questions. I'd love to try and help. I pumped at work for DS 8 months and DD 2 months. I will tell you that my supply dropped drastically when I went back to work and relied a lot on pumping, but this was not the case with 2 of my co-workers. It's different for everyone. Good luck!!

  • I'm so sorry. :( I remember the feeling when I took Simon to daycare. Has Zoey gone to this daycare before? Or do you know any of the other children there? I'm sure if you've chosen it it will be a great place for the girls to be. :) When a friend of mine was stressing over taking her youngest to daycare I would remind her that Joshua went to daycare everyday from when he was 12 months old til he started school and he's a happy healthy kid. He's got great social skills, he is really smart and transitioned beautifully to kindergarten, and he was able to build up immunities before starting "real" school (he was the ONLY kid in his class with perfect attendance last year). All this just to say, it is hard but there are positives too.

For pumping, I've heard that your body can adjust to pumping less but producing more? Maybe you could work it out to where you only have to pump once but you still produce enough to save you time at work. Be sure to stay hydrated!

I am really sorry though. Going back to work sucks. :( *hugs*

  • Maybe you can get a hands free bra so you can pump and get other things done.  My cousin is a school principal and she just closes her door and puts on her pump and does 2 things at once.   Maybe you could grade papers or something.

  • I give you a lot of credit for arranging pumping at work to continue breastfeeding!! Don't forget the BF board - they are a great resource if you'll need it. I went to daycare everyday from very early on and it all worked out just fine...it'll be an adjustment but it's great that you have them going a few days the week before you go back.
  • Thanks for the advice and encouragement ladies. I think that I will definitely look into one of those hands free pumping things so that I can try to multi task while pumping.

And yes, zoey did go to this daycare before. She started at 14 months and went up til Liana was born. So that should make me feel better about things, but after going there today, I am not feeling great about sending them there. :(. But that is a story for a new post since this one is buried already...
