2nd Trimester

Breastpump advice (for what it's worth).

My sister has a medela PIS and it's lasted through 3 kids and she will use it for her upcoming 4th.  Since she had such great luck I got the Medela freestyle when I had my first in July of last year.  I started having battery issues around Feb. and so I called and they sent me a new one the next day.

Well, something recently happened to my replacement pump (I have no idea) and I lost suction.  After contacting them, they sent me replacement parts for free and when those didn't alleviate the situation they immediately agreed to send me a new one which I will have tomorrow morning (I called this morning).

I realize that it doesn't look good that I've had issues with 2 pumps in a little over one year, but honestly, that could be just my luck.  Seriously anyone who knows me will tell you, that's just par for the course with me. I have read that the freestyle, although convenient is not as rugged as the PIS, but my point is that Medela has Awesome customer service.  They have been SO great about timely assistance and replacements without hassle, they know that going without a pump for a couple of days is not really an option.

The other piece of advice I would give is to not buy your pump until close to your due date because the warranty starts when you buy it.

  • I would like to add:

I've heard some people shy away from a Medela because of the price. Check with your insurance company! A lot of them will pay for your breastpump under durable medical equipment. Mine paid 100% for a breastpump but it had to be a Medela PIS or Freestyle. I got the PIS for DD1 and it worked great! Still have it for this next LO and just bought replacement hoses (since they will be 4 years old).

  • I second this. I have the PIS and I've used it for 2 children and I work away from home so a lot of pumping and I plan to use it with baby #3. I've never had any issuses with it, it's a must have!!

The freestyle is the only one listed as hands free, but I didn't actually use the hands free straps it came with.  I just used my bra to keep it in place.  I just sit at my desk and type while I'm pumping, I don't see why you couldn't do the same with the PIS.  It works fine and there are bras they sell on amazon that really would help make almost any pump hands free.

This is soooo true.  Many women on my BMB are already thinking about buying one or already have.  I don't plan on getting one until after baby comes.  What is the warranty on Madela?

ETA:  Just chatted with my insurance company and breast pumps are a contract exclusion under my plan.  I have Blue Cross.  I know that each plan is different though.  They can be purchased with an FSA though.

  • I EP with my freestyle for 6 months (the first 6 months I both nursed and pumped) -- used it a total of a year.  I have never had any issues with it and plan to use it again (God willing).  I'm surprised you are having so much trouble.

I sometimes wished I got the PISA simply becuase I know it's stronger -- but I commute 45 minutes each way on the train to and from work everyday.  I needed something lightweight and convenient and this worked out great.

ETA:  I never used the hands free straps either.  It was easy to just hold them in place with your bra - I was able to type and/ or read my book (I read most of the time).

  • It's worth it to call your insurance and check.  I'm Blue Cross CA, and a breast pump is covered 100% under durable medical equipment.
