Sippy Cups

Have you all started introducing a sippy cup yet?

After trying 3 different kinds, we finally found one that DD 'gets' how to use. Well now our new problem is that she hates water. When she sucks on it and the water enters her mouth she spits it out and shakes her head. I don't want to keep giving it to her and have her eventually protest the sippy completely.

Do I give her something else (water down juice, formula), or just hold off until she's older?

Re: Sippy Cups

  • We give formula or water with just the slightest bit of prune juice. Which one did you get that worked well? Simon's still having trouble with his, but I'm too lazy to buy more. I kind feel like he'll just figure it out eventually.

Also, we let him drink from a regular cup a lot. We hold it of course, but let him tip it back. He REALLY likes to drink water that way. Oh, but he only likes it cold out of the fridge. Don't know if that might help any.

  • We started awhile ago but I think she likes to chew on the spout more than anything.  She's just now starting to try and actually take drinks from it.  She's a lazy butt when it comes to drink though and just lays there and plays with her hair while drinking a bottle, so I'm prepared for the sippy cup to take a while.  I would also like to know which one he kind of gets?  We've tried a Nubby one and we have 2 Avent ones.  She seems to like the Nubby better.

I tried putting ice in it because she's always drawn to my cup when she hears the ice clinking around, but no dice.

  • First we tried the Playtex First Sipster:

She could never tip it enough to get anything out. I even tried sucking on it myself and it was really difficult. I also don't like how hard the spout is.

Instead, I thought I'd try something with a straw so she wouldn't have to tip it. We got the Playtex Insulator:

DD could not figure out the straw. I tried putting food on it. I tried putting formula in it. No go.

Finally, I decided to try the Tommee Tippe First Sips cup (we use their bottles so I was hopeful they'd be similar):

They also make them with handles, but DD likes to use the handles as leverage to hit the cup into another object, so I went with the regular ones. I love that they have a soft silicone spout, more similar to a bottle. It also weighs a lot less than the Playtex ones we tried so DD can hold it easier.

  • Thank you!!! I love having pictures too, helps so much when shopping.

  • Jay also dislikes the taste of water. He will start to sip on his sippy cup and when he gets the water in his mouth he pulls out the cup and makes a very disgusted looking face. But he will drink water just fine from a bottle. You could try adding a little juice but we had the same reaction with juice we did with water.
  • we have the playtex one, and she doesn't really like it. but if we take the top off, she loooooves to drink water "like a big girl". ha ha. i have no idea why.  she usually ends up wearing most of it, but it keeps her from drinking from a real glass, so it works out.  sometimes i think she just likes anything new to chew on.  :)

i also give her a little bit of prune juice in with some formula, but she likes water better....  the pedi said not to give her too much water, as she'll fill up on that and not eat formula like she should, so i only let her have a little bit.

thanks for posting the different ones you've tried!  we also use the tommy tippee bottles, so i'll look for their sippy cup and try that for her too.

  • DS loves sippy cups.  He loves to bang them and throw them around.  Beyond that he doesn't really get them.  He loves watching us drink from glasses though and likes holding plastic cups.

Thanks for posting which ones you have tried!

  • DD was a big fan of water in the beginning either, but now she loves it!  I have to actually take the sippy cup away from her so she will eat!

  • We put formula in the sippy cup and sometimes water. We also help him drink from it with the top off and he loves it. (even though it is way messier...) We have had better luck with sippy cups that have silicone tops like a bottle. (like nuk or nuby)

  • I second the silicone tops. I loved the Nuby, it has a small center so it's easier to hold (but the first day I used it I got a huge slit in the nipple and it has to go back). I used the Nuk for the first time today and it's also great. So is the Dr. Brown with the handles - I just have to tip it for him (same with the Nuk). My least favorite are the Munchkins but even those are good.

He will drink a tiny bit but prefers to chew on the bottom!! You can really tell which ones are truly "spill proof" lol.

  • Joaquin loves the Nuby one.  I usually put super cold water in it and some ice so she's probably totally just teething on it though.
