The question about how long you've been TTC made me wonder what the correct way to count cycles is. Obviously, if you've been trying every cycle continuously, the counting is simple. But, if you've had to take breaks or TTA for various reasons, are you supposed to start your count all over again? If so, why?
For instance, we were TTC last fall for 3 months, then had to take a break when I got a new job to ensure I was eligible for maternity leave. Now we have been trying again for 4 months. Should should I count that as 4 cycles, or 7? TIA!!
Re: Counting cycles
I would consider that cycle #7.
Severe MFI. Me: supposedly all clear but eggs showed vacuoles.
IVF #1 January 2012, ER Jan 14th: 34R, 27M, 23F. Day 3: 18 embies still strong. Day 5: zero "good," one "fair," the rest "poor." Transferred 3. None made it to blast or to freeze. Jan 28: BFN.
Lucky IVF #2: Transferred two beautiful day three embies on St. Patrick's Day. BFP on HPT 7dp3dt. Beta 1 (14dpER)=106; Beta 2 (16dpER)=140; Beta 3 (19dpER)=264! First u/s 4.17.

Same
BFP on Cycle #8. Natural M/C at ~8 weeks
IUI #1 and #2 (8/12, 9/12)- 50 mg Clomid + Ovidrel = BFNs
IVF #1 (EPP) 13R/10M/9F, 5DT 1-4AA blast, beta #1-148, beta #2-322, 5 frosties!
You count the 7. You took a break, but you still tried for 7 total. I think the only time the count starts over (and this is generally for IF/insurance purposes and not for ours) is a miscarriage. Many doctors/insurance companies will argue that conception occured, thus restarting the clock. For those of us going through it, though, the end result is the same as a failed cycle: no take home baby.
FWIW, we started TTC 16 cycles ago. Four of those have now been TTA and/or just not going to happen - 2 in the middle, and two most recent. I still refer say we've been "TTC for 16 cycles" but at this point it kind of doesn't matter.
