Is spotting ever ok?

I'm trying hard not to flip the junk out, but it's not really working. I got up last night to pee, and noticed a little bit of tan/light brown spotting on the TP. A couple hours later, I got up to go again, and there was more. I sat in my bathroom floor and just cried, out of pure fear. I finally got up the nerve to get out of bed this morning and go to the bathroom again, and the spotting is all but gone. There's a tiny bit of a tint left to my CM but not much. I'm not in any pain, no more cramps than normal, but I just have no idea why I'd suddenly be spotting.

Any theories?

Re: Is spotting ever ok?

  • Spotting is always scary but sometimes it just happens. I had some spotting around 20 weeks with my first and she came out just perfect. If it is that little (just on the TP) and if it is brownish, I don't think you need to worry. Call your doctor if you need peace of mind - I did when I was spotting and they didn't even want to see me.

  • This is my first pregnancy so I am not a pro. My suggestion is to call your doctor and ask them. It may be nothing or it may be something. Calling them may help settle your nerves. Sorry I could not be any more help. I hope everything is okay.

  • I hear its totally normal as long as there is not a lot or bright red. I think you are fine.

  • What you described sounds normal.

  • I've had spotting like in the past that after overdoing it a bit.  My doctor always told me to take it easy and rest with my feet up for a day anytime that happens.  It usually went away as quickly as it arrived.  I have always heard that brown spotting is fine - it's old blood.  He told me to report anything that was bright red.

  • Spotting is common, but always scary.  Tan/brown spotting usually means old blood and I think since it's not very much, looks like old blood, and you aren't cramping more than normal you should be okay.  But I know how scared you must be.  Hugs to you.

I do think you should tell your OB since I know mine wants to know about anything like that, even if she thinks it's nothing.

  • That doesn't sound like anything to worry about. I would just let your OB know if this is the first time it's happened.
  • Definitely scary to have that happen.  I've had that in prior pregnancies and my doctor said as long as it's brown it is most likely "old blood".  For reassurance though I would call the doctor.  Hugs!

  • My theory is - you're pregnant :) I had a ton of brownish tinted CM my last pregnancy almost all of week 6-7. Enough that I wore a pantyliner. It's totally normal as long as it isn't bright red.

ETA: When I mentioned it the next week at my 1st appointment they told me it was normal!

  • Spotting in pregnancy can be perfectly normal, as long as it isn't red, but brownish like you mentioned I don't believe that there is any cause for concern. If you aren't comfortable with it though, ask your doctor!

My mom had this in one of her later pregnancies and spotted throughout the entire pregnancy and delivered a healthy baby... She was told that she had an extra layer around her uterus that her body was shedding.

  • It sounds like everything is ok :)  I agree with the others that it would be best to call your doctor.  I'm sure he/she will help set your mind at ease.

This exactly! Spotting isn't necessarily normal but it is common. I woul call your OB just to let her know and see she thinks, but brown spotting is old blood.

  • I know how scary it was for you to see that spotting! I will say that with my second son right around 7 weeks, I began spotting! I was sooooooo scared! I didnt know at the time that this is fairly common because I had none with my oldest. Its sounds like you are fine. If it feels better call your doctor and ask to be seen. I did, and I ended up getting to have an early u/s so we could check on baby. Maybe, they will let you have one too. Good luck sweetie!

  • I know how scary it can be. I've had it happen to me twice this pregnancy. I've also heard of ladies bleeding red and they have healthy babies. Sometimes the bleeding can be a sensitive cervix or a cyst that ruptured. I would let your ob know and keep an eye on it. I spotted from 6-9 weeks last pregnancy and saw a healthy baby bouncing around at our 9 week u/s.

  • Right around 7 weeks is when the embryo implants further into the uterus so some spotting at that time is completely normal - scary, but normal. Knowing that doesn't make it any less stressful, though!

  • I'd be concerned with spotting at 4 weeks because it could be a chemical pregnancy.

BUT, I had spotting with my DD at 6-7 weeks and she is now 22 months old :)

  • Hi!  I had about the same thing as you.  On Saturday, I saw that there was a different color spot on my panty liner.  There wasn't much and it was a faint brownish color.  I of course, was extra nervous and kept on going to the bathroom and checking to see if it came back.  It didn't until today.  This morning I felt a little more wet than normal and went to the bathroom and whipped and on the tissue was a some light brown cm.  I frecked out and then later started crying.  It hasn't come back since but I can't stop checking.  I did call the nurse and she said it's normal and to just stay hydrated and take it easy.  If there is bright red blood and severe cramping then come in to the doctors.  This is my first pregnancy so I'm extra nervous!

  • With my first, I had this as well. :) I am sure you are fine. Kinda scary though right? I'm glad you shared, I am sure other's may have had the same happen and wanted to know why as well. :) GL.

  • At least it was brown, that does sound better.  Last week I had bright red :o(  Just a teeny tiny little bit.  They rushed me in and did an u/s and found a heart beat and said everything looked fine and called it a "threatened miscarriage" and told me to rest... :o(  I am still nervous every day looking for it again :o(  I go back Thursday for an u/s and I'm hoping they will comment on how good lo looks or something to put me at ease....
