When did you start weaning them off the sippy cup?

I have no idea when I should start introducing a regular cup with DS and I know he's going to spill a lot because I do let him finish off the remnants in the sippy cup by taking the top off and letting him drink it like we normally do. He does well for the most part, but sometimes accidentally spills it over himself.

Wondering when to transition to a regular drinking cup and if I should buy him a special cup because our glasses have a very wide mouth and would be too big for him to drink out of.

Re: When did you start weaning them off the sippy cup?

  • I use the take & toss sippy cups with my girls. For meals at the table, I let them drink out of them without a lid. We started off with a straw, though. However, on furniture or in the car - they still get a lid.

  • I've started giving the girls cups with no lid during meals.  It's not all the time but occasionally - a lot of times I try to not give them a drink while they are eating to make sure that they actually eat first.  I figure once I can trust them to drink out of the cup regularly at the table at home without major messes then we'll see about regular cups for other times of the day.

I know they are capable of a regular cup if that were all that was available, and that's good enough for me for now.

Oh, and I wouldn't give them an actual glass right now for anything - I'd say get some little plastic cups until you are sure it won't get thrown across the table or on the floor. ;)

  • We introduced a cup w/ no lid around 12 -15 mo (occasional use) and DD loved being a big girl.  In DC at 16 mo they were not allowed to have sippy cups anymore.  That helped us a lot at home.  At age 2, DD's guilty pleasure is to drink milk from a sippy cup.  All other liquids she prefers a grown up cup.

So to answer your question-when you're ready I would try a regular cup on the occasion-maybe only 1 meal a day and eventually increase the use until your LO gets the hang of it.

We started w/ the plastic kids cup w/ a wide mouth.

  • We started a week ago. He gets regular take n toss cups when he is at  the table. If we are out and about he gets a closed cup.

  • I honestly can't remember, maybe 15 or 16 months? I definitely bought her plastic cups. The glass ones we use for ourselves are way too heavy-bottomed for a small child to manage.

They weren't really "special" cups in terms of their design or rims, but they were plastic kids' cups in bright colors.

She still uses a straw-cup or Sigg bottle for summer camp and to be out and about. I don't use a regular open cup for myself when I'm riding the subway or doing errands, so why should she?

  • Wow, didn't really know there was a weaning time! Good to know. I do give my LO an open cup on occasion or even let her drink out of our cups but she drinks it way too fast sometimes and then wears it. I guess practice makes perfect.

  • I haven't really started yet. Oops!

Spoke to my son's pedi at his 2 year well visit yesterday and he said just start now. I have a few take and toss cups (that I don't toss) and will start slowly. Hopefully he'll get it.

  • We actually started teaching DD how to drink from a regular cup when she was a year old.

This was mostly at my parents' prompting, since they didn't have sippies when they raised us, but it's worked out well.

For the past 6 mo or so, DD has a regular (small) cup at meal times, and only gets sippy cups if she's gonna be walking around with it or something. But all meal tmes she uses a regular cup.

Oh, and yes, I would get small cups. They're pretty cheap. We got a pack of 6 at IKEA last year that work really well, and we also have a pack of 6 that we got at Kroger because DD liked them. All small, lightweight, and PLASTIC (ie. not breakable). She can drink out of bigger glasses, but it's more difficult for her, so I would definitely start w/ small cups.
  • Before my kids were 1 we would give the them drinking cups in the bathtub.  The always would try to drink from them.  That just naturally made them reach for our cups when we were drinking and by the time they were 15-17 months old they were on regular cups full time.  We don't allow drinks anywhere but the kitchen so they just drink and put it back on the kitchen table.  When we are out and about- they generally just drink from a water bottle.
  • We switched DS to a regular cup at about 19-20 months. He had to practice a lot so we mostly just gave him a cup with a little water in it at dinner time every night (water so it didn't matter how much he spilled really). He got the hang of it, and now at 2 he's a pro. I still give him a sippy cup though if he wants a drink "on the go" because he runs so much he'd spill a regular cup all over!
We got him a couple plastic cups to use.. eg Tupperware, or just any smaller plastic cup.

  • Thank you everyone for sharing! I like the idea of the take and toss cups and will start on those soon.  DS will feel like a big boy!
