Not sleeping in crib help!

My dd will sleep everywhere but her crib. She was fine until we went camping and she got to sleep in the sleeping bag with me (much too cold for her to sleep in her own). We were only gone two nights but since then she refuses to sleep in her crib. She will sleep anywhere else (she fell asleep during lunch in her highchair) when I try to move her she wakes up and screams. This happens everytime we try to put her down. I try to let her cio but it isn't working. She cries, screams, and calls for mama or dada for 10+ minutes. Any suggestions would be much appreciated as my dh and I need some sleep.

Re: Not sleeping in crib help!

  • It sounds like she needs to re-learn how to fall asleep by herself. I would start with her nighttime going-to-bed time. Do your routine and put her in her crib awake, say goodnight, and leave. If she cries, go back in at intervals (how far apart is up to you) reassure her but don't pick her up or do a lot of interacting, and leave again. Repeat until she is asleep. Then for middle of the night wakings or naps, do what you need to do for everyone to get some sleep. Then if after a few days she's still needing you to go back to sleep and for naps, do the same routine for during the night and naptime.

That's what I would do, but there are many different approaches to sleep, not saying this is the only right one. Good luck, I hope you get sleep soon!

  • I actually take the opposite approach. As in, sleeping in an unusual place was scary (and had she not been sleeping with you she probably would have been up crying half the night.) So she has to regain the sense of security that was lost. So I would stay in the room until she falls asleep and be prepared to come to her in the night if she cries and again stay until she falls asleep. Over the next 2 weeks I would read her signs and gradually work m way back to the way things were.

  • I dont have any real advice but just wanted to say that the same thing is happening to us. We went to Delaware for 3 weeks and Gracie slept in the twin bed with me the whole time. Then when we came back, all the sleep and nap routines I had established before I left needed to be reestablished. We've been back 2 weeks and she is starting to show improvement. The only thing we've been doing is trying to do what we did before we left. Also DH is responding to her more than me so she doesn't think she gets me if she cries. She usually ends up in bed with us anyway :) GL

  • Thank you for the suggestions! I got lucky tonight and she fell asleep on our walk and didn't wake up when we moved her to her crib. Hopefully she keeps sleeping and doesn't wake up.
