Cloth Diapering

In prepping and cleaning CD...

Here are a few questions:

1. So, I understand that dipes made from natural materials need to be washed several times to maximize their absorbancy. If this is the case, does one run the dipes through several rinse, wash, dry cycles immediately in succession OR does one rinse, wash, dry then use then repeat until the absorbancy has been achieved?

2. Where do I find a how-to instructional on how to prep the dipes (like boiling cotton prefolds or not mixing microfiber with hemp when washing)? Or does each brand explain how to?

3. If left over time (say, washing the dipes each day vs every other day), wouldn't poop residue be tough to remove from CD? Is there a way to treat the dipe before storing in a wetbag or pail or is the cold water pre-wash rinse all that is needed?

4. So for a set of dirty dipes does one run more than a single wash if microfiber and cotton or hemp inserts are used? Then do people typically have two pails and separate the types (into natural and synthetic fibers) as the diaper is changed?

Thank you.... just trying to get ready once I purchase my stash to start next week.

  • 1. You can prep them either way. When prepping those with natural fibers, it is recommended that you prep them seperately so the oils don't get on your other dipes. If they don't have snaps, they can usually be boiled for an initial prep and to remove those oils. I would recommend at least 2 separate wash/dry cycles and then you could use the dipe before washing it again. Just know it won't last as long absorbency wise.

    2. Check the FAQs or Google. Each diaper should come with instructions on how to prep it though as well.

    3. When babies are EBF or EFF, their poop is water soluble so it isn't necessary to treat the dipe in any way before putting in a wetbag/pail. Once baby starts solids, you'll want to remove most of the poop, otherwise you'll end up with poop in your washer. This can be done by using a sprayer, the good ol' dunk and swish, or leaving the diaper out and removing the poop after it has dried. You can dunk and swish if you want to try to help prevent stains, but stains are very easily removed by sunning your diapers.

  • 1. I don't use until they've gone through multiple wash/dry cycles, unless I boil instead

    2. IMO a tutorial is unnecessary. If it's synthetic fibers, wash and dry once. If it's natural fibers, wash and dry 5-6 times, or boil once for 20 minutes, then wash/dry once.

    3. No. It's not like the diaper dries out sitting in a pail for a day. A cold rinse should be all you need.

    4. Nope. Once they're prepped, you just do a single wash/dry cycle with all of your diapers. You don't have to segregate them.
