Food Allergy

WDYT about my food issues and preg experience?

I have had milk protein issues my whole life and they got more significant during college.  I can tolerate small amounts cooked in things and things like butter on bread, but nothing more significant than that.  However, when I was pregnant with DD, I could tolerate dairy.  It was so weird.  When I was pregnant with DS, I craved it, so that didn't surprise me, but for the first time in 10+ years, when pregnant with DD, I was eating ice cream!  As soon as she was born, I went back to "normal".  Any thoughts????  Oh, and it is my son who is allergic to dairy, DD has no known allergies.

  • It's not uncommon for people to be the healthiest they've ever been during pregnancy.  Your body kind of kicks in and does what it should be doing bc it knows it has a job to do.

  • The same thing happened to me, though I've heard the opposite quite often. Many people told me that they've never had a problem with dairy and became lactose intolerant when they were pregnant. My issues weren't as severe as yours, I just basically couldn't have regular milk on my cereal or eat a bowl of ice cream, but when I was pregnant, I craved cheese so bad I broke down and ate it. When I didn't have a reaction I switched back to cow's milk and I ate it all. the. time. I just now noticed that I'm starting to have issues again, but since DD is allergic to dairy, it won't be hard to just have everyone in the house on a dairy-free diet.

  • It's because your immune system has to "back down" during pregnancy, so your body doesn't reject the fetus.  So foods you were allergic or intolerant to, suddenly get more "freedom", if that makes sense.
