We are going to a birthday party next month for a 1 year old. His parents are into the eco-friendly, as are we. Anyone have a favorite affordable toy they can suggest for the present?
In general, wooden blocks and wooden knob puzzles (the melissa and doug kind are our favorites) aren't filled with plastic or other crap.
Fatbraintoys.com also has a pretty large "green" section. Whole Foods has a decent selection of plan/sprig toys. Though, the prices are higher than other places. Both Sprig and Melissa and Doug have planting kits with little shovels and watering cans. This is super fun!
You could also make something yourself. Ie. Sock puppets that look like his family members. You could make your own memory type game out of card board and other recyclables. Or if you're super into reuse/recycle and the family is on board you could make a stove/fridge out of a cardboard box. DH did this for DDs, complete with "stainless steel" from duct tape and marker drawings and they loved their little kitchen for a very long time.

I second the wooden puzzles and blocks. DD has been playing with hers since she was one and loves them! She also loves the nesting blocks (playing with them now) - we have the ones made from cardboard. I'm not sure of the brand of ours, but I know Melissa & Doug make some. Educo also makes a really cool nesting toy. Books are also always a great option! As far as puzzles go, she likes the chunky ones.
Green Toys makes some great toys that are suitable for 1 year + (Dump trucks, race cars, fire trucks) I also think their range of "food" is awesome too - you can "build sandwiches" etc. Friends of mine's kids are 2.5 and still play with the sandwich set.

Jack received this for his 1st birthday and he still plays with it at 18 months. I'm also now addicted to this toy company.
