doggie clicky (table food)

my dog sits right next to us while we eat and stares a hole through us until we give her a scrap. it's totally our fault and not hers. actually, i hate to confess this, but i think it's kind of cute how she begs (i know, i know!). [Poll]

Re: doggie clicky (table food)

  • We have a "go to bed" command. She will either go lay in her kennel or the rug in the living room while we eat. She will usually do it on her own without us saying anything when she see the plates come out of the cabinet.

  • Our dog doesn't really get much table food, but if he does he gets it after we are done eating and we put it in his bowl...

  • DH feeds his mom's dog...off his FORK!  It disgusts me so much!  Then she sits and whines at the table and it drives me nuts.  If he did that to our dog...I would promptly stab him with a fork!  Drives me nuts!!

  • There is no begging allowed for our dogs. We don't let them in the kitchen when we are making food and we do not let them stare at us while we eat- they must be lying down (nearby is fine) or playing with each other. If we do give them food, which is rare, it's after we are done, and NOT directly off our plates.

Our dogs are too big (85 and 65) to not have manners while people are eating.

  • DH never grew up with pets, whereas I been around dogs my entire life. When we got our puppy (now 100 lbs!) I told him, dont feed Journey at the table while we are eating or else he will expect it.

Well, DH didnt listen to me so now Journey sits between us at the corner of our dinner table. He is such a sucker! Luckily the dog doesnt whine while we eat, just sits and stares.  The best is how he pouts and goes in the other room when we are eating something he doesnt like (seafood).

  • Maggie lays under the table when we're eating, but no begging allowed!! I think it's a terrible habit for a dog to have. It's incredibly rude for an animal to beg for food at the table. She only gets real people food in the kitchen when we're prepping, and the bulk of that is veggies. She loves her veggies! On rare occasions she will get a scrap of meat or something, but again, NEVER from the table!

This. If there's not enough to justify "leftovers" or the food got too mixed up on plate to sort out and save, then we will scrape it into our dog's bowl as opposed to throwing out perfectly good food.

Our dog is not allowed in the same room as us when we eat.

    This!

    Anxiously awaiting baby # 3! Due May 14, 2017!

  • My dog also has the "go to bed" (or in his case mat) command and will go lay on his bed in the corner while we eat. He knows that if he stays there then he will likely get a small piece of whatever it was in the other room when EVERYONE is finished eating.

He's very very food motivated and moochy by nature so if we didn't have this "rule" in place he would literally be trying to steal food out of people's hands.

  • We had a border collie named Lucy for 12 years that my Mom told us not to feed table scraps to, but she was the worst offender. The result was that Lucy would sit next to whoever looked like the messiest eater and whine loudly through the entire meal. But she was otherwise a sweet, well-behaved dog, so we didn't really mind this.

My mom's current dog, an American Eskimo named Max, has never been fed from the table by us, but was by his previous family. But he just sits and stares for a few minutes, then goes and lies down in the doorway to the kitchen. He might get some scraps in his dish, but not until the meal is over.

  • Our command for our dog is No Beg--he usually listens and goes to lay down after a couple of commands. He doesn't full-on beg, just sits and stares.

However, when he's not begging, he gets scraps.

  • We used to, but had to stop after our pup got a bad case of pancreatitis.  He had a few bites of hamburger meat and hot dogs during a cookout and got extremely sick.  Now that he's had it once, the vet said he's more prone to have another episode, which is triggered by fatty human foods. After an overnight stay at the vet and $600 later, he is now on a strict diet of low fat hard dog food.  We all learned our lesson!

This. We never let her beg from the table. She has a "pillow" command. We just started a few months ago (once we found out we were pregnant) not letting her in the kitchen when food is being prepared. She actually now does this on her own when she sees pots and plate coming out. Left over food also goes into her dish if she gets any at all.

  • My dog has an easily upset tummy so we don't feed her off the table often. If I do decide to give her a little something, I wait until we're finished eating and take it into the kitchen and give it to her there.

She usually lays in the kitchen floor or under the table and doesn't make a peep while we eat. I can't stand begging and she knows she'll get in major trouble if she even gives us sad eyes or whines.

  • I'm not totally against it, but for 99.99% of the time, we don't.  They used to get more table food & their bodies were used to it, but living in an apartment now, it's just not a good thing!  However, I don't freak out if someone gives them a scrap here or there.  My dad is worlds worst-- he's 'grandpa' so he gives them some of whatever he's got on the plate.  I don't mind it because he lives out of state, so it's rare.
