I think I'm going to lose it....

T will not sleep! For the past 3 weeks, nap time has been a nightmare with him fighting going down for 2+ hours. I've tried laying with him, nursing, leaving him alone (he doesn't cry - just plays), getting him up and trying later, and nothing seems to be working! I know he is tired - he can barely keep his eyes open and keeps falling like he does when he's tired... Bedtime isn't much better, and he keeps waking up at 4am wanting to play. With the baby coming in the next couple weeks, my patience/energy is exhausted and I'm at my wits end. Is there some kind of sleepless period at this age (22 months) that I don't know about? Any advice? Help please!!!

Re: I think I'm going to lose it....

  • Well for naps both of my boys started skipping them around that age.  Cooper will also just sit and play so I just leave him in his crib and let him have the quiet time.  On days he doesn't nap he goes to sleep no later than 6:30 while on days he does nap it's closer to 8:30 or sometimes 9!

Is he working on any teeth? Other than teeth I don't know of anything at that age that would disrupt sleep.  Good luck.

  • I can sympathize! My 22-mo old is sleeping less these days too. He used to go to bed at 7pm, and now it's more like 8pm.

And naps used to be 11-1 or 11-2, and lately it seems he's just not tired enough at 11, so I hold off. Today I put him down at 12 and he played/chatted until 1:45! He's sleeping now, thankfully, so I know I'll get at least a 1 hour nap out of him.

Some of his friends of similar age are napping 1-3 or 1-4, so maybe I just need to keep him up longer and past lunch? I don't know.

The good thing is that he seems content to play and chatter in there, so I'm comfortable letting it go for awhile. He still goes down easily at night, albeit just later.

If you're comfortable just letting him play, I'd do that. Enjoy your alone time before it's gone! :) Good luck.

  • Oh boy. I'm not ready for him to drop his nap.... I hope that's not it! He has skipped the nap all together a couple of days, but he still wouldn't go to sleep until his normal bed time (8ish) and then of course he was a nightmare the next day...

He did just pop through the second of his bottom canine teeth, and his gums are a little swollen from his 2 year molars but they don't seem to be bothering him anymore (last week they were), and advil doesn't seem to be doing anything to help him sleep :-(

Of the two options, I guess I'll have to keep my fingers crossed that it's his teeth :-) Thanks!

  • Lunabeam, when he falls asleep so much later do you let him sleep as long as he wants or do you wake him up after a certain amount of time? I'm so afraid that if he doesn't fall asleep until 2 then he'll be up till 10...

I guess a nap is out for T today... I put him in his room at 12:15 and he still hasn't fallen asleep (or even cried for that matter!) I'm going to go let him out now and keep my fingers crossed that he'll go down early tonight!

  • Well, so far, when he's fallen asleep later, he's been waking up on his own after about 1.5 hours, so it hasn't been an issue. We're at  1.25 hours now, so we'll see!

Weird that he's just not needing 2-3 hours of sleep in the daytime anymore!

I would wake him up if needed, though. I would just open his door and make some normal amount of noise and let him wake up gradually.

If I were in your shoes today, I'd do the same thing and just consider it a no-nap day. No way I'd want him falling asleep at 3pm. He would be up way late!
