GD girls, cheat day on your diet?

am i horrible person if i have a cheat day on Saturday? we have a wedding to go to, our first since our own 5yrs ago!  i am so excited for it and even though i know it won't kill me to not have the cake...it's a wedding, how do you not have the cake? LOL.  dinner is fine, chicken, veg and a baked potato.  not sure what sort of apps there will be but those are my weakness.   one cheat day won't throw things off too badly will it?

  • My diabetes specialist told me I could cheat Christmas and Thanksgiving...so go for it.  :-)  I cheated yesterday with a slushee :-(

  • If you are that worried then skip the potato at dinner and just eat the cake.

  • If you really want the cake (which I totally would eat some, too), skip the high carb stuff for apps and dinner. I had a tiny piece of cake at my baby shower for DD and my numbers were pretty high after (like 180...oops!), but she still turned out fine :o)

  • My nutritionist/dietician also said it was fine to have a piece of cake at your baby shower or some other special event.  She said some of their patients don't bother even testing their blood sugar since they know it is high and just make a note of it when they send in their blood sugar counts. 

    Besides, you can always drag yourself out on the dance floor after the cake to counteract any high numbers!

  • I went to a wedding on Saturday and actually did pretty well with my numbers.  I stuck as close to the diet as I could, and I had a half a slice of cake as my bedtime snack, along with a serving of cottage cheese I brought from home.  My fasting number the next morning was a 96, which is where it usually is.  It wasn't too bad.

  • I cheat every weekend!!! But I also have never had a high glucose reading after a meal, only fasting. But even then my fasting is still always under 100, usually mid 90's if I cheat the day before. So I will be cheating big time this Saturday at my baby shower. I'm going to eat all the cake I want.

    I went to dinner on Saturday and had Chili Verde with rice and beans a ton of chips and salsa. I was SHOCKED when my glucose level 1 hour and 10 minutes later was only 96!!!

  • My bday is coming up and you bet I'm having cake!  I'm sure I'll cheat for dinner too - I'll definitely be aware of what I'm eating and try to keep carbs to a minimum but I'm also sure I'll go over my alotted 45g carbs for dinner.

  • I cheat about once a week. And I definitely had cake at a wedding I went to last month. And surprisingly my #'s were okay. I just made sure to eat more protien and not many carbs for dinner.

  • DH and I went out to Chili's tonight for our last date before the baby comes. We had fajitas and they were delish. Then I cheated- I had a coupon for a free dessert, so we split a Molten Chocolate Cake. It was fantastic! I've been good for months and the baby should arrive anytime, so I don't feel too bad about having some dessert for once!

  • thanks ladies!  it's only been 2wks since my diagnosis so i feel bad cheating this soon!  I have had great fasting #'s, but have had a few spikes in the 130's at lunch and dinner after meals well within my carb allotment.   I think not having the potato will be worth that piece of cake, not so sure about the dancing!!

  • Yesterday was a bad day for me too and I didn't even have anything special going on!  My friend gave me this baggie of candy and i kept munching on it throughout the night!  Plus I left my meter in the car my hubby took so I had no idea what it was doing to my blood sugar.  I felt guilty and since I couldn't test I was just HOPING that i was still in the normal range...obviously I probably wasn't!  So...point is I think everyone cheats here and there and cake at a wedding will be just fine, one bad # isn't going to do anything to your baby.  I would load up on the protein though, skip the potato (cause for me any sort of potato makes my bs spike, not sure for you though) and then have a couple bites of the cake if that'll do the trick and if not well then have the whole damn thing!!  haha!

  • I cheated on Xmas Day (1 cookie) and NYE (2 cookies), but for my birthday (Xmas Eve) I had a low carb cake.  I was going for a VBAC though so I didn't need any high numbers to screw with my chances.  When DH and I went away for a weekend I made sure to snack on high protein snacks and at dinner had stuff like steak and I never felt deprived.  Maybe eat 1/2 a piece and just load up on protein like pp said.
