Preemies

Talk to me about solids

Our pedi (who is a preemie mom herself) is pushing pretty hard for solids and has been bringing them up since DD was 4 months actual age.  We had planned on waiting until 6 months, possibly even 6 months adjusted age.  Right now she has great head control and is interested in watching us eat but hasn't reached for food or otherwise shown interest in food.

What approach did you take and was your pedi on board?  I know it's up to us ultimately and I just don't feel like she is ready.

  • Our pedi has suggested we wait until DS is 6 mo actual unless he shows interest before. We are learning towards BLW (https://www.baby-led.com/) and will go from there :)

This is what we are planning on doing too (including baby-led).  Add this to the list of hippie crunchy things I do.  LOL!

  • Thanks, ladies.  6 months actual is only 9 days away and it feels so soon!  Maybe I'm the one who isn't ready...

  • Our pedi left it up to us.  But the feeding specialist we see (who is also a premie mom) suggested waiting until at least 6 months.  But I didn't feel that my boys were ready even at 6 months so we waited until 7.5 months (5.5 months adjusted).

They are NO worse for having waited.  They are big healthy guys that are wonderful eaters.

    GL whatever you choose!

  • Our pediatrician has a lot of experience with preemies which is why we chose her!  We waited until 6 months of actual age (he was 10 weeks early) and he loved it.  We took it REALLY slow.  One food a week, one time a day.  Our biggest struggle was finger foods...even the puffs.  He would choke on a puff everytime we tried until 11 months.  Good luck!
Camden Thomas, was born 10 weeks early, after momma had one week of hospital bed rest and LOTS of meds, 7 weeks in the NICU, and lots of love. We are so proud of our little bug!
