Austin Babies

has anyone been to Big Bend lately?

any tips?  We're thinking about taking the boys out there this fall and Jay said, "ask your board friends if they know anything about Big Bend".  So, here I am.  :)  If you've been out there, do they have nice cabins or should we borrow a 5th wheel?  Did your kid(s) like it?  Anything else you want to tell me?

  • I went a long time ago so my memory of the accomodations may not be accurate.  However, we took a camper and we loved it. It was very hot but fun exploring.  I recommend the camper.

  • i went last year with DH, but no kids in the picture and we camped in a tent. i was actually surprised to see how many RVs were there with satellite TV and all that. what's the point of going out into the middle of nowhere if you're bringing along all the comforts of home? :)

bring a lot of water - it's dry out there. better to reserve a spot in advance online, esp. if you go during a busy time (fall break?). make sure you give yourself enough time to get to the campsite while the sun is still up.

Seeing all the neat rocks and stuff that we don't have here.  It's not my fault they don't have a/cs.  :)  We don't camp when it's hot, only when it's nice and cool/cold out.  But I do like the comforts of a bathroom, so I'm all about borrowing my ILs 5th wheel when necessary.  Plus, I think it would be easier (and less stressful) to contain 2 toddlers who know how to work zippers than a tent would be...

haha all good points. like i said, the times we went, it was just DH and i, so i've never had to do the outdoors/camping thing with kids. my sister and her husband used to have a camper, and their two kids really enjoyed it (without mosquitos and fighting the elements).

  • I would check out the Chisos Mountain Lodge. it's in the Basin, which gets much cooler at night/day due to the elevation. and you have the window trail right out your door :) We have not been to Big Bend NP with our kids. We've been to the area several times though with them ... Marfa/Alpine/Ft Davis areas. we definitely do low key stuff, and we usually hit Balmorhea at some point (awesome natural spring pool). I'm actually dying to take them to the national park, I think they would *love* the rocks.

here's info on camping in the Basin (5400 ft elev)...looks like it's not good for RVs/campers

     here's the lodge:
