Potty Training: Poop Question

I think I've seen several people on here mention that their kids were pee trained before poop trained.  This is basically where we are now, but I wanted to see if anyone had any advice.

Background: We did the 3-day potty training "bootcamp" with Brady about 2 weeks after he turned 2.  We wanted to see if he was "ready" and so far things have gone great!  He now only wears underwear when he is with us (but he still wears pull-ups at daycare - we're working on that) and over the past 3 days that he was with us full time, only had one pee accident (which was right after he pooped so that may be related).  He has started to tell us when he has to go pee, but we still also just take him to potty about every 1-1.5 hours to be sure.  He pooped in his underwear, though, every time.  He has actually pooped on the potty a couple of times when we happened to catch him so I don't think he is afraid to do it, but mainly he tells us he pooped AFTER he does it.  We talk to him about how he got Lightning McQueen or Buzz Lightyear or whomever is on his underwear dirty and that it is gross and I think he gets that, but not sure if there is anything else we're supposed to do to help get him to tell us BEFORE he goes poop.

Thoughts or suggestions?  Thanks!

Re: Potty Training: Poop Question

  • If he isn't scared to poop and this issue is more of him not putting it together that he needs to do that on the potty I think you just need to try and pay close attention and try to catch him when he is about to do it.  Interrupt him in the middle of it if you have too and put him on the potty.  He might not finish the first time but eventually I think he will.

Ditto this. Geneva wasn't afraid of the toilet, but would sneak off to poop. If I could catch her squatting (in whatever corner she was hiding in), I'd hustle her to the bathroom as fast as I could. Catching her was key. Awful to say, but just like housebreaking our dogs.

We also did the whole, "Ewwww, that's yucky" bit, but catching Geneva as she was about to do it was the most important thing.

  • Thanks for the tip.  We'll just keep trying to catch him.  Unfortunately this weekend he seemed to do it while we were out of the house (in a store, at the aquarium, etc.) so getting him onto the potty wasn't as quick as if we can catch him at home.  I'm sure we'll get there... eventually!

  • Gavin wasn't scared to poop in the potty but for whatever reason he just wouldn't do it.  He was peed trained for at least 5 mos before the poop thing clicked.  But once it clicked, he hasn't had a single accident since.  The daycare teachers tell me that it is just confusing for boys.  The whole sit or stand thing plus just being so active and not wanting to stop playing to do their business.  Hang in there!
