3rd Trimester

please read.. no one should be treated this way.

i'm 37 weeks and i'm too afraid to take a f***ing tylenol. i was UNKNOWINGLY tested with my urine when going to the hospital freaking out because i hadn't felt my son move in hours. they came back accusing me of drug use when i won't associate with my own cousin because of drug use and how much i frown upon it. they then threatened me with social services when my son is born and so on. has anyone else ever gone through this harassment? the doctors bombarded me in a room with my mother, my husband stepped outside for a minute, and wouldn't give me any answers as to what was going on with my son, the ONLY concern i had in the first place, yet they had the audacity to come in and accuse me of drug use because "it couldn't be false." i was also accused of anorexia because of how small i am yet lately i have been out eating my husband at meals. i'm angry and frustrated because they didn't tell me anything and refused to retest my urine or test my blood. sorry to anyone else that has gone through this. i'm trying to figure out what steps to take now, although i've had urine tests 3 days in a row and am having another one on monday so if all but this one have come back with drug usage, there was obviously a mistake. any input would be appreciated, especially if you have been subjected to this kind of harassment. thanks.

  • I would demand a retest and to see the results. I would also ask to speak with who ever is in charge and send a letter to the hospital about the accusations.

  • My husband was diagnosed with a condition called Rhabdomyolisis, or something like that back in 2007.  It was father's day, he had just picked up his teens from their mom's house, and on the short drive home he suddenly thought he was going to die.  He was dizzy and just said he thought his heart was going to beat out of his chest.  At the hospital, they informed him the main way a person gets this condition is through using drugs such as steriods and cocaine and heavy exercise and weightlifting.  While pumping up, the person rips a muscle or causes some sort of muscle trauma due to the excessive drup use and they get the condition which can be deadly.  Well, we had just used our neighborhood gym for the first time the day before and he did say it felt like he had injured his shoulder muscle.  It was the first time time either of us had worked out in months.  He does not use drugs.  We don't have the $$ first of all and he is completely antidrug.  He is no pumped up bodybuulder by any means!  The scenario they painted for us just did not fit him at all, but yet they kept asking him over and over about cocaine, etc.  Even though his urine test was negative.  Just because of his condition they assumed he was using illegal drugs.  I mean, the doctors and nurses wouldn't shut up asking him over and over "Are you sure...you haven't taken anything?" like that.  WTF?  They even asked me to leave the room so they could interrogate him.  Crazy!

Come to find out it was an improper diagnosis because he felt the same way a month later and it was diagnosed as anxiety.

  • they told me amphetamines. i didn't even know what the word was! she had to explain it to me. then i replied with i would like another test because that's absurd, she refused. why would you refuse to give another test if you're "so sure" that i'm taking drugs? there's so much more that happened and the rescue squad in town, my husband and i both ride for them, is backing me up when i do go after the hospital. they sent me home after finding something wrong with my liver enzymes when my unborn son could be in danger. false accusations, refusal of tests, stress, and being discharged without proper treatment. i'm going to my drs office tomorrow morning and demanding another urine test and a blood test to use against them.

also, i'm unsure if everyone is aware of this, but more than 70% of urine drug tests done on pregnant women come back FALSELY positive because of hormone levels.

  • First of all I would have demanded a blood test. Then I would have  told them that the urine test is flawed and must be backed up by the blood test to be admissible in a court of law much less to require the removal of my child. After that I would demand that I be given a copy of all test results run that day as well.

As for the doctor, I would ask to see my OB and they had better get him there now.

  • I would be absolutely pissed off. I hope that this isn't the hospital you plan on delivering at, or I would be finding a new one. You never even should have been tested without your knowledge. And as wrong as it may be in actual drug abuse during pregnancy, I didn't think they could call CPS for an unborn child. I'm so sorry that you had to go through all of this and hope that your LO is doing ok. Have you felt more movement? If you're still concerned you should go to another hospital to be checked out.

  • What did you eat for the last couple of days? I know that poppy seeds can come back positive for I think marijuana but could be wrong on which one. I would write a list of all that you had to eat. Urine and blood test for separate items. Why did they run a drug screen anyways? We only ran ones on the mom's who didn't have prenatal care but not on anyone else. We ran only urine and no blood.

Poppy seeds can come back positive for opiates. I believe heroine is the most common one. I'm not sure, if opium is an amphetemine or not though...

  • In most states, doctors are allowed to unknowingly test pregnant women for drugs if they feel there is a possibility of abuse.  What I don't understand is why they won't retest you.  It doesn't make a lot of sense.

I hope that you can get the situation straightened out.

  • Yeah I would talk to my OB about this as well. Im so sorry you had to go through that. That's scary and they are putting you under all that stress.  You cannot just accuse people like that.  If all else fails and they keep up with it, talk to an attorney because they just can't accuse you because they "think" they know, with stuff like that you have to know.  How they know you might have ate something that gave an reaction.  Plus I'm guessing you are a naturally thin woman.  There lots of people that are like that and that does not mean they are on drugs or have an eating disorder. Some doctors and nurses are just idiots. I'm not surprised if they mixed up your urine speciment with someone elses. They have been taking urine samples all this time, why this now?  Yeah everyone is right I would demand a urine sample and a blood sample and I would ask what did it come up positive for and I would demand to see the results, you have rights too.
  • took a nap. trying to just get through all of this. LO hasn't moved much again today.. severely hoping that he comes soon but not before i have more tests run to prove that the results were false and i was accused without justification. the fact that they refused a retest of my urine AND refused to test my blood when i told them that's impossible, i want a retest is suspicious to me. i am never stepping foot back into that hospital. it's the same hospital that called CPS on my aunt when my cousin was sick and they claimed she was poisoning him. (he wound up having a gastro problem but i can't remember from what). i was 82 pounds when i got pregnant and am now at 100. i eat more than my husband at some meals but just don't gain weight. i've been on and off sick lately and throwing up a lot but i would NEVER do that intentionally. my uncle is a lawyer so i will be speaking with him tomorrow and also going to my OB and demanding tests to prove to social services that i am NOT  a drug addict or taking any kind of drugs. more than likely, we will also be suing the hospital for discharging me AFTER they told me that they found something wrong with my liver but they are only testing for hepatitis because i'm a "drug addict". i just want this nightmare to end! all i wanted was to make sure LO was okay. =(

  • FYI most likely they did not maintain "chain of evidence" for this test to ever be used against you with CPS or anyone else.  I would double check any beverages you have been taking or vitamin supplements.  Amphetamines are added to a lot of those things.
Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Just throwing this out there... is there ANY possibility that you've been exposed to amphetamines? Sure, the hospital is being a bunch of ridiculous, pompous A-holes & that really needs to be addressed. However, (especially if you live in a multi-family home, ie. Apartment, duplex) if your neighbors are manufacturing drugs you could have been exposed to the fumes, or somehow crazily it could've gotten into your system unknowingly.

You mentioned that you ride for an ambulance service- any possibility of skin-contact with any substances there?

I would definitely look into the possibility that this has gotten into your system without your knowledge. I am sorry you're going through this, and I hope everything turns out to be okay.

  • If you tested positive for meth it then it is likely to be leftover from ANY cold medications you have taken prescribed or OTC. Meth is made from  Sudafed or similar products. That is why you can't buy more than one box of most cold meds at a time and without giving your ID/driver's license.
Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker image.
  • Im really sorry that happened to you.. I am an RN and I work in a drug rehab and we have people pop positive for amphetamines very frequently. It is known as a cross reaction to medications like Sudafed and can be easily proven in a retest. I am not sure what state you live in but in NJ as a health care employee you have a legal obligation to report a positive urine drug screen on a pregnant woman to DYFS. I dont think they should have accused you of anything though! I hope this information helps you.
  • Amphetemines are things like meth and speed. Its not uncommon for hospitals to do drug tests on pregnant mothers without telling them, however it takes several failed tests for cps to get involved or remove a child. DSD's BM did meth while she was pregnant and DH still had a hell of a time getting custody and parental rights severed.Thankfully he did and DSD managed to come out unscathed.

  • Have you taken any allergy/sinus medicine?  That could cause a false positive too.
  • Without a doubt they should not have disrespected you.  But I would skip the lawyer and the lawsuits and whatnot.

It is common practice to give everyone in the hospital a UA.  And it is common practice to discharge a patient with elevated liver enzymes after ordering a hepatitis panel.  You only belong in a hospital if you are critically ill or unstable.  Otherwise patients are discharged to follow up with their PCP or a specialist.

You don't win a lawsuit because somone disrespected you, because a hospital refused to give you a repeat UA, or because they discharged you with elevated liver enzymes.  How many times do you think people test positive and lie about it?  It's not right for them to disrespect you, but I'm sure an overwhelming number of patients deny drug use when confronted with a positive test.

Follow-up with your OB and call your PCP in the morning.  If you are really concerned, go check in to another hospital and have a second work-up done.

  • And how did they get a urine sample if you didn't give it to them?  They don't have to get specific consent to test it for drugs.  Just like they don't get specific consent when they run various blood panels, they only get consent to draw the blood.

  • A coworker of mine had a similar incident. While she was giving birth, they couldn't find a vein for the IV...anywhere....arm, hand, nothing. They ended up using the vein in her neck! They said this was indicative of drug use and pretty much treated her the same way they treated you. They called CPS, they interrogated her and her husband, etc. The nurses were all mean to her because they were certain she was on drugs and she ended up not getting cleaned properly and ended up getting an infection because of it. Of course after several more tests, and even testing the baby, (I think she said they even tested her husband?) they found no drugs anywhere and had to drop the case but the damage had already been done. She had been treated like a criminal and the birth of her daughter was overshadowed by the hospitals idea that she was on drugs. I hope everything works out for you. Good Luck.
  • You're right, the hospital shouldn't disrespect any patients like what you've described.  But I'm very curious as to how you could fail a urine test if there's no way at all???  And I'm really curious why you "severely hope" your LO comes soon.  You're 34 weeks!!!!!  That would not be good!  Of course many babies survive being born at that point, but why on earth would you hope your baby would be born wayyyy too early?????????  And you really can't blame the hospital for being very concerned about your weight.  IDK any adults who weight 82 lbs and are considered healthy, so seeing a 100-lb pregnant woman would alarm me and most people I know, too.
  • Sue them? America, EFF YEAH! Think of all the babies whose mothers have put them at risk and who they have saved by doing these screenings.

I don't know you at all, but from your posts, I'd wonder if you were almost belligerent towards the stuff and that's why they didn't retest you.

"obviously"? Hep C doesn't have many signs or symptoms and can even stay inside of an infected person for decades before symptoms develop. I hope she's had follow-up tests since then...

I was wondering this as well.

Being underweight (face it, you are. 82 is not usually considered a healthy weight for any adult) often times accompanies amphetamine use. They are used as an appetite supressant. Doesn't help your case in their eyes when you pop on a test in your 3rd trimester and weigh only 100 lbs. And if you were using, they need to know what because it may clue them in as to what is happening with your LO.

This needs to go through your OB and find out who you need to report the staff member to at the hospital. There are a number of things that can cause you to test positive.

This.  I'm not shocked OP was tested.  If you are that severely underweight normally, and only gained 18 lbs when you're a month from giving birth... that's a serious red flag.  I'm shocked if her OB hasn't mentioned it.

Like everyone else said, follow up with your OB.  They can touch base with the hospital.  I hope this isn't the hospital you deliver at.  Let us know how the other tests come out.

Perhaps based on a BMI calculator?  Try using her height, 5'0", and weight pre-preg - 82.

    https://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/

I'm her exact height.  When I was in high school - college, I weighed 97 lbs exactly.  I look at those pictures and look skinny, but not like a skeleton, and I have a very petite frame.  I can't imagine dropping 15 lbs off that.

  • My MIL weighed under 100 lbs her whole life, including while she was pregnant, and that's just the way her body was.  She gave birth to my healthy DH (he was small, but healthy) via c-section because she was just too small to have a v-birth.  We shouldn't judge someone for being small- she can still be perfectly healthy.
  • And the whole reason people brought up her weight (which OP volunteered) is because it is indicative of drug use.  Which may be why ER doctors thought it prudent to check for drug use.  Which they apparently found, at least using their methods.

I personally didn't accuse her of anything.  I asked for her to let us know how the results came out - then she flipped her shiit and got incredibly defensive.  Whatever.

At the moment, you have no damages.  What you describe is disrespect, but no actual loss to you.  So there is no valid lawsuit for you to file.

If they had a positive result, they HAD to talk to you about it.  If you were disrespectful in your responses to them, you own some of this.  If you weren't, well, they are just assclowns who dealt with a bad situation poorly.

It makes NO SENSE that they wouldn't retest to confirm.  If I were you I would also ask to challenge the chain of custody to ensure your specimen wasn't confused with someone else's.  I might go for a hair test actually.  Another urine test now wouldn't help.  Most drugs are out of your system in just a few days, so a negative result a few days later doesn't prove anything.

  • It's weird this sort of thing never happens to people who know how to use proper grammar.
  • If you would like me to use proper grammar, I will. I was lazy and tired and did not feel like pressing more keys on a keyboard so I didn't capitalize. Sorry to bother you with that, I guess.

Now, as for everything else. haha.

I have been underweight my entire life. I eat healthy and take care of myself. I've never broken 90 lbs before pregnancy but I don't understand why. No one did. I do not look like a skeleton, I had 3% body fat. My mother is also very tiny, was 78 lbs at 4'10 when she was pregnant with me and at her max then was 102lbs.

I went to my doctor today and she was dumbfounded with what happened. She is filing a complaint as well on my behalf. Also, she asked why they would not retest me when I requested a retest and a blood test. She also stated the same that research shows, urine drug tests on pregnant women are not accurate and must be followed with a drug test. She said if I was truly on amphetamines, I would be addicted and that if would have showed in all of my previous blood work, which it did not. To put my mind at ease, she sent out another urine test and blood test and is also checking to find out what is going on with my liver since the hospital discharged me without doing an entire check.

The resident Dr. at the hospital is the one who made all of these accusations and from what I found out today, has had several complaints against her in the past few months alone.

As for what I "tested positive" for, they did not say, so my doctor is also going to be inquiring about that. I asked what it was, they said "it's an amphetamine" but that was it. When I said "there has to be a mistake, I won't even take tylenol. Can I have another test and blood test done." I was told no, there's no mistake, and she left the room without an explanation.

As for why I said I hope he comes soon, I have been 3 weeks ahead on all U/S and tests. He's measuring about 38 weeks as of today, I turn 35 weeks tomorrow. They checked everything and he is completely developed, lungs included. Another reason why is because of the hospital saying there is something wrong with my liver. I don't want whatever has been making me sick to affect LO. I would not want him in the NICU. However, I was born at 35 weeks and was home in 2 days. It all depends on the baby and his or her development.

About the possibility of being exposed, I don't see how. My husband and I live in a Mother/Daughter house with my parents and siblings on the other side of the house. We don't go out unless it is to a family members house for a family function and our friends come here. Our neighbors are all older and barely come outside so I don't think there would be any exposure in that aspect, either.

They always take a urine sample to test for protein and things like that, which is why I did not think anything of it when they asked for a urine sample.

As for being belligerent towards drug tests, I'm not. What I AM against is being treated like a criminal when I've done nothing wrong. Also, if I was truly a drug addict, I don't think I would care enough about my son to go to the hospital when I don't feel him moving for hours on end, even when trying to provoke him. I would be more concerned with my needs. Also, from what I've researched, amphetamines are an upper, which would mean myself and LO would have been hyperactive, which was not the case at all.

As for getting defensive, I didn't mean to at all, so for that I apologize. I'm extremely frustrated and tired. I'm now waiting for my test results. As soon as I know anything, I will post. I think I covered everything that was said by others but if I missed anything, let me know.
