Potty Training

XP: Has anyone used the 3 Day Potty Training technique?

Has anyone used the 3 Day Potty Training technique to potty train your LO (written by Lora Jensen)?  If so, how was it doing it and did it work?  It seems to make sense but also seems very intense.

  • I can't say that I have fully tried this method eventhough I bought it 2mo ago. Per her method, which I agree with & just don't have the time, you need 3 solid days at home! I suggest buying it, reading it for ideas and trying it out if you can. How old is your LO? Also, do a search on this here...many have asked. You can also find a coupon code online AND if you sign up to get her newsletter, occasionally she'll send out a code! Gl, she seems very nice. She'll probably send one out with the long holiday approaching!!

  • We did the 3 day technique...didn't really work for us.  Day 13 it started to click as I changed some things.  ie. no underwear, only rewards for making it, using pull-ups at bed and nap.

I think DD is doing great now and I think that this method helped us get started but to think a child will be potty trained in 3 days completely I now think is a bit unrealistic.  Although I started early and maybe it would be different if she were older.  DD is going to be 2 in 2 weeks and is potty trained at home, still working on when we are out.

  • We did it last week, Tues-Thurs.

Although we've still had occasional accidents, it absolutely worked for us. DD will be 3 in October, btw.

We followed the plan EXACTLY as outlined -- no diapers at all, including naps & bedtime, starting on Day 1. Also, we never asked, "Do you need to use the potty?" I just kept saying, "Tell Mommy if you need to use the potty." (This is outlined in the plan.)

Day 1 was the roughest. The morning was filled with accidents, and DD would freak out about being wet. By lunch at noon, though, it seemed to click. Her 2-hour nap was totally dry, too. That night she had one accident.

Day 2 was much better. One accident, I think, and maybe one at night.

Day 3 was awesome, although the one accident she had was when she pooped in her pants during the day. That night, though, she totally woke up in the middle of the night and asked to use the potty. (And then did.) So exciting! :)

We've seemed to overcome that, though, by being silly and reminding her that poop goes in the potty. She says, "Poop goes....on Mommy!" And we all laugh and say, "Nooo....." And "Poop goes....on the ground!" "Noooo...." "Poop goes....IN THE POTTY!" And we all cheer. Silly, but it's worked.

Friday morning was our first out of house outing, to her Gymboree class. Every few minutes I'd remind her to tell me if she needed to use the potty, and she totally did. And she had no issues with using the big toilet without her potty ring. (I perched her on the edge and held her hands to steady her.)

Oh, and I was worried about ruining her mattress (she's in a toddler bed), so I bought puppy pads at the nearby pet store. I put a puppy pad on the mattress, covered it with one of her crib sheets. Then another pad on top of that, covered with another sheet. Then covered that with her Ultimate Crib Sheet, which is waterproof. That way when she's had random accidents at night, I can just remove a layer and not worry about the mattress getting ruined.

    Hope that helps!

  • Yes, we used it and it didn't work.  It did put interest in DD's mind about using the potty and we practiced going through the motions. She did actually go on the potty a cpl times.  It was months later and all of a sudden it 'clicked' w/ DD.  I credit the kids in the DC.  A few have been recently potty trained and DD would come home telling me who the big girls were that wore panties.

  • Thanks for the feedback!  I'm borrowing the guide from a friend and have read through it.  It seems really intense but also seems to make sense.  I'm set to do this in September.  DD will be 3 in December.  DC has been preparing her and she sees other kids use the potty there so I hope that helps.  I really hope it clicks with her but am going in with an open mind.

  • I used it over labor day weekend with my DS.  He will be 2 in October.  It totally worked.  He has had 3 accidents in the last 2 weeks and the last two were because his grandmother didnt get him to the potty quickly enough and he had to poop.  I will say we followed day one and day two precisely.  Except on day two we went out twice.  A brief walk in the morning and we went to birthday cookout the the evning and I bought the potty with us,  It was great cause I sat it next to me as a constant reminder and it also made it easier when he had to go.

On day three I showed him the big boy underwear and he wore those all day since that would be what he will be wearing at daycare.

The first week after the initial 3 days I pretty much put him on the potty every hour  and made him sit for about 10 mins.

He is really just starting to tell us he has to go potty before I ask. But if I ask him and he has to he says yes.  He will also go whenever I sit him on the potty even if it just a little bit.

Best piece of advice is to make sure you go crazy and celebrate when LO goes potty.

I can say that it is mentally and physically draining.  DH and I kept waiting for nap time and bed time.  The happiest time of the day!

He is pretty much 100% during the day.  Still wears a diaper at night though.  He used to soak 2 diapers over night (I would change him at 7:30, which is bedtime and he would be soaked by 11 and I would change him again).  Now he is down to one diaper at night since he goes potty right before bed.

My question is how to keep him dry overnight.  He drinks a cup of milk before bed and a cup of water at dinner at 6:15 ish.  Any one have any suggestions?
