Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Schedule when introducing cereal

At DS 4 month appointment Friday, his pedi approved starting him on solids whenever we would like. She said basically the amount, number of times per day, etc. were all up to us. I was wondering if anyone who has already started their LO on cereal/solids could give me an idea of what their LO's schedule for feedings (cereal & bottles) was like in the beginning. Did you feed the cereal at the same time as a bottle? If not, how long before/after a bottle did you feed? TIA!

Re: Schedule when introducing cereal

  • You could choose any time of day but I think most people choose dinner or first meal of the day because most LOs are in daycare and they want control over the introduction of solids. Start with one meal a day and stick with that type of food for at least 3 days to ensure there are no allergic reactions. I believe most people did feed with the bottle but not 100%. I've heard that it's better to introduce vegetables before fruits so that the baby won't reject the vegetables since fruits are so much tastier.

  • Right with you. We've been trying rice cereal with our DS for about a week. We are only offering it at one meal a day. We've tried bottle feeding then the cereal and he doesn't eat much. We've tried bottle feeding a little, then cereal, then back to bottle that works better. I think it is just trial and error. Our ped recommended trying rice cereal, then oatmeal cereal, then barley cereal, then purees. I think we'll stick with the cereals for now til DS gets the hang of it.

  • I started LO on rice cereal about 4 1/2 months and she didn't love it right away.  It took a few days to get used to a new texture.  I mix a tiny bit of puree into the rice cereal and have been introducing purees that way.  We've done applesauce, sweet potaotes, and are currently doing pears. I am going to alternate veggies/fruits.  I feed her approx 1-2 tablespoons every day, late afternoon.  She is EBF and I just kind of play w the timing of nursing and feeding, some days I nurse first, other days I feed her first.
