GF Moms & Preggos- Did you have a celiac-related miscarriage?

I was just curious. My m/c and infertility helped me learn that I was probably a celiac (although, no, I haven't been formally tested...I noticed I had every single symptom, and thought I'd try a gluten-free diet and see if it helped...within a week I was feeling so much better, and after having been trying to get pregnant for 3 years I was pregnant a month after going GF), despite the heartbreak. I'm beyond thrilled to have this healthy pregnancy and happy to be feeling better (those who are in the same boat know how much a difference it can make!), but always terrified I'll miscarry again. Any other women in the same boat? How do you handle your gluten-envy (when everyone else is enjoying their gluten-containing foods...it gets soo hard for me!)? My husband is an amazing source of strength, but I find it so draining to have to worry about all the food I eat, and just knowing there are women out there who are like me would be so relieving!

  • I had a miscarriage before I was pregnant with my second DD but I was not diagnosed with celiac at that time. I had all 3 of my children before I was diagnosed though so I don't know if the m/c was celiac related or not.  But I do wonder and I do wonder if my other pregnancies wouldn't have been high-risk if I had been gluten-free.

For food, keep safe goodies on hand at all times.  I keep my freezer stocked with muffins, cookies, cupcakes, etc.  I keep safe candy and cereal bars in my purse and in my car.  It helps to have a yummy alternative.

  • I have not had a miscarriage. My pregnancies have all resulted in healthy babies, though I did have severe hyperemesis brought on by gluten (before I knew I had celiac). If you are gluten free the risk of miscarriage is not higher, it's only higher if you have celiac but are not observing the diet.

As far as how do I handle the temptation, it's been pretty simple for me. Now that I know the awful things gluten does to my body I just think of it as poison. I would never knowingly consume poison so I just don't do it. I also love to bake and through lots of trial and error have finally figured out how to bake most things gluten free.

    Good luck with your pregnancy!

  • Also, I know you are still fairly new to the gluten free diet. It is very hard in the beginning. It's hard to know what is safe and what isn't. It's hard to to know what restaurants are safe to eat at. But it gets easier. It will become second nature. I bake up a batch of gluten free cupcakes and keep them unfrosted in the freezer. If I'm going to an event where I know there will be cake I take one out and frost it and bring it with me. That way I get to enjoy my cake along with everyone else. I always try to have a safe alternative that I like just as much as what is being offered so I never have to feel deprived.
