Natural childbirth friendly docs in St. Pete?

Can anyone recommend any natural childbirth OB/GYNs in the St. Pete area?  By natural childbirth, I mean vaginal and unmedicated.  Also, a plus would be if the doctor also suggests alternative treatments for common pregnancy ailments before he/she prescribes meds.

TIA!

  • I have been seeing Louis M. Paolillo and his midwife Donna (I'm delievering with Donna)for years. They do not push meds on you at all. I have chosen to have an epi but I brough it up- not them. Additionally, I am a vegitarian and they have never pushed on that subject either. As a bonus they deliever at Morton Plant- it is beautiful, secure, state-of-the-art, comfy, highly rated staff (espcially for laction) and all private (rooms are more like a hotel than hospital). They are located in Clearwater (I live in Seminole but it's worth the drive to me), 727-446-9100

Thanks for the info!  Is this doctor and midwife in Clearwater?

  • Yes, right down the street from the hospital on Jeffords Street.

  • I've been seeing midwives at Tampa General & everyone's made it clear that they're supportive of a natural birth & they were excited that I was trying it. I had one bad experience with midwife Pamela Kelly, but we came across Brenda Marshall on our second appt. & we absolutely love her! The office is right across the street from the main hospital, so you'd basically be going to the same place to deliver. I've heard that the recovery rooms can be tight, but I personally don't really care about a room that I'm in for just 2 days. But anyway, after having a rough child birth with my first, the midwives at TGH have helped calm my fears & I now am more calm about going into labor with baby #2 thanks especially to midwife Brenda Marshall. Oh, also, the wait time to see them is never long at all & they take their time with you. :D

  • Oh, and they've never pushed any meds on me. I was taking a lot before my pregnancy for various things, and I said I had stopped everything b/c I didn't know if they were OK, and we didn't even go into alternatives. I only got a prescription after asking for one. My midwife mentioned one idea, and I approved. It was never pushed on me though.

  • I'm going to All Children's OB/GYN in St. Pete.  They have 2 locations - one at Bayfront downtown and the other at St. Pete General.  They deliver at both hospitals.  At this practice, you have the option to rotate between 7 OB's or 3 midwifes.  I chose the midwifes because I am low risk and because it is much more personal.  I would highly recommend this option.  They will be with you from the time you check in and will deliver your baby assuming there are no complications.  It seemed like a no-brainer to me.  From my understanding, there is much less intervention with midwives as well.  They are completely open to no medication birthing and even if you want all the drugs.  They present all the options and let you have the final say.

Another option you might want to consider if you really want to go all natural is a birthing center.  My friend had a baby at Breath of Life birthing center in Largo and loved it.  It is very hands off during L&D.  The facility is beautiful and the rooms all have showers and large jacuzzi tubs for water births.  The only downside to this option is that if you change your mind about pain meds in the heat of the moment, there is no option to get any because it is only midwives - no anesthesiologists.  HTH!

I had no idea that All Children's had midwives available as a practice.  WIth my son, I had him at Labor of Love in Dunedin (a birth center with midwives), but I got absolutely no lactation assistance after the birth, so I am trying to do my research now for when we are pregnant again.  I want to make sure I have lots of help with BFing, especially since we were not successful this time.

Do you like the 3 midwives that you see?

  • Love them so far!  They come in and give me and my husband hugs like we've been friends forever!  They answer all of my questions and never try and rush me out.  I feel so comfortable with them and can't imagine it any other way.  I would definitely recommend this option!  https://www.allkids.org/body.cfm?id=1085
