D.C. Area Babies

what a waste!

I just finished going through all of Warner's baby clothes (crazy Sat night at my house!) because my sister is about to have a baby boy and I'm lending her what I have...that is salvageable. I now have a pretty large pile of onesies and other various baby clothes that are so disgustingly stained (spit up) that there is no way they will be worn again.

And the thing is, I threw away a lot of badly stained things before I packed the clothes away and the things I put away were clean at the time! A lot of people told me that spit up oxidizes (or whatever) and shows up as a stain later and that's definitely what happened. Either that, or I was partially blind at the time!

Anyway, it just seems wrong to throw away all these clothes (actually I'll cut them up for dust clothes and rags), but I can't even imagine giving them to goodwill.

Re: what a waste!

  • Warner wore them more than once, right? might be worth keeping it for your 2nd one, hopefully (s)he is not a spitter but if (s)he is, these could come in handy!

  • I'm having this exact same experience--stuff that was clean when I put it away in storage but now it looks horrible!  I've decided to keep the stained stuff for now to use as back up outfits for DS2--like spare outfits for daycare, diaper bag, etc.  And I'm with you, I don't think Goodwill will take them but I am going to ask before trashing them.  Or I may even ask DS2's daycare if they'd want a few of them for back up outfits in case a kiddo goes through what their parent provided.  Trying to think of ways to use these clothes!!

  • The exact same thing happened to me when I was going through baby clothes. There were some yellow stains on stuff that I know weren't there when I packed them up.

  • sofka, trust me, I kept a lot of things that were more subtly stained they are the in the "good enough for my kid" pile. the things I'm not reusing look like they have been peed all over. we're not talking about a couple of spots around the collar...it's like half the onesie is yellow.

(all of this is reminding me of what a pain dealing with Warner's reflux was...I'm REALLY hoping baby #2 doesn't have it!!)

  • I have been shocked at the stains that oxyclean has gotten out (clothes that have been through the dryer too) so it might be worth buying it and letting the stuff soak overnight.

  • Oh no! I didn't know stains show up months/years later. That really sucks.

  • are these solid onesies?  could you dye them a darker color?  I mean since you work/are a mom/are pregnant you must have loads of free time to re-dye clothes, huh? Stick out tongue

  • I have heard the following has helped:

    1. Overnight soak in oxyclean (2 scoops) and vinegar (1 cup).
    2. Regular wash in the morning
    3. Dry in the sun

I have not tried but some recent second time moms I know have said it worked wonders and saved the clothes.

  • okay, I'm skeptical, but definitely willing to give this a shot. I'll try soaking in oxyclean later this week and will report back.
