VBAC

successful vbac after having a C b/c you stalled?

Has anyone had a successful vbac after stalling during your last labor?

I want to attempt a vbac for this delivery. I even switched to a midwife because she's more supportive then my gyno was. With my DS, my water broke and I never started contracting for over 8 hours, so they started me on pitocin. I got an epi at 5cm, and I was progressing fine until I hit 8cms. I stalled at 8cms for over 4 hours, after trying everything, I just wouldn't progress. Then I started developing a fever (sign of infection) and my BP was rising. I was approaching 25 hours since the time my water broke. So unfortunately I had a C. I had a great recovery and it wasn't as bad as I thought, but I would definitely LOVE to give birth vaginally to experience that. I want to hold my baby right away, I want to push and watch my baby being born... those are my reasons.

So, I'm HOPING for a vbac. But I'm worried that I'll stall again. I know I won't know until I try, but it's just a worry in the back of my mind. My midwife said it's definitely possible that it'll be fine, but I could stall again too. There's no way of knowing. I guess I just want reassurance that it can work!

  • Me! I was on pitocin with DS for 2 days and only made it to 4cm. With DD after only on pitocin for 7hrs or so I was a full 10cm. Each pregnancy is different. YOu don't know it will work till you try and just be open and relaxed about knowing it might not. But stay positive.

  • With my first I was induced with Cytotec, Cervadil, breast pump and maxed out on Pit for three nights.  I got to go home b/c my bp went down and went into labor on my own a couple days later.  I came in at 5 cm with a bulging bag, they broke my water at 8 cm since I thought it would move things along (I heard to wait until at least 7 cm).  I got up to 9 cm and then they weren't get a reactive strip from DS so I was hooked up to an IV for fluids since chugging soda wasn't doing anything.  Being in the bed and stalling at 9 cm. with the talk of more Pit made me give into the epi.  I got to 9 1/2 and never got to push.  Not fetal distress or anything, just FTP.  I still think it wasn't necessary.

This time I got to the hospital at 5 cm with a bulging bag again!  I was stalling again when I got in the shower just like last time, but this time I had a doula and the knowledge that stalling out wasn't good.  I really felt like my labor was progressing the exact same way, but my doula suggested trying different positions, while the first time I was basically on my own with DH and I would walk and stand in the shower the whole time.  I also didn't let them break my water b/c I read that it could have been a reason that DS wasn't positioned right (he never got past 0 station).  I pushed for less than 90 min. and it was awesome!  I really feel like I had my perfect birth this time even though I had many sleepless nights leading up to it.

  • With my first I stalled at 9.  With my second I had a vbac in 4 hours.  So it's possible!

  • I was induced, and stalled at 9cm for 6 hours, got an epi, then there was fetal distress and I had a c/s :-(  I'm glad to read the other's woman's success stories!  I'm so psyched for a VBAC!

  • Yes! My first OB was telling me I stalled out and there were no options after just a few hours. My second OB took HOURS and HOURS to help me through labor, find new positions, suggest nipple stim, etc.

I find it laughable that I was labelled as FTP after 19hours the first time and took 29 hours of labor the second time for my successful vbac.

I assume that your c/s was legit as you had a fever, but assuming you don't have a fever this time, there's no reason you can't vbac. The baby's position as well as your OB/midwife's patience are huge factors here.

  • I just had a successful VBAC.  With my 1st I was induced & never dilated past 4cm.  This time I was already at 4cm when I checked into Labor & Delivery.  I posted my birth story a few posts above.

  • I had a c/s for failure to descend (pushed for 2 hours) and had a very easy VBAC.  GL!
