Pregnant after IF

possibly a silly question... car seat and pick up trucks

is it safe?  where do we put the seat?  DH has a "work truck" that he drives M-F and will be picking up LO when I go back to work, so he'll have an extra infant base in the truck... problem is that it is not a full size, so no back seat... it does have airbags that turn off automatically or can be turned off manually, but is it ok for the infant seat to be in the passenger seat or should it be in the middle away from the window?

I was at his shop yesterday and was "joking" with one of his bosses about his new truck (he is getting a new one in a couple weeks) having a full cab and he just laughed and said that was not going to happen because of the extra cost... oh well, worth a shot! :)

  • Absolutely not safe.

  • Turn off the airbag, push the seat all the way back.  Putting it next to the window is fine.  IMO.

  • My DH currently has a quad cab truck with a large backseat with the latch system. We are not buying extra bases for his vehicle since we are not planning on having the twins ride back there, but they could.  Check your truck's owners manual to see what it says about child car seats.

thanks illinigal!  That first link was great and totally answered my question/confirmed what I was thinking.  Good call about looking in the owner's manual, I will have to check it out when he gets the new one.  I figured it had to be "okay" because let's face it, people who drive pick-ups as their primary vehicle get pregnant too, and I'm sure they don't go buy a new car just because it isn't the "safest" option... I know it is obviously not the safest option, but we don't really have a choice in the matter... this is his mode of transportation to/from work and he HAS to pick up LO on his way home.  period.  Nice to know I was on the right track.  Thanks again! :)

    good idea, thank you!

  • I've heard a big no to carseats in trucks w/o back seats, but if you have no other choice...  Turn off the airbag and hope for the best, I guess.  Back seat is always best.

  • i was lurking for an update on someone and saw this.  Being from Texas, its quite common and not illegal (and appears to be somewhat convenient--easier to put the paci back in and nice to be able to look down and see that LO is doing alright).  I do have to agree that its not the safest option but if its the only...
