We checked into the hospital @ 6pm. I was 5cm. I couldn?t rest
between contractions because my whole body shook, it was from the
adrenaline the nurses said. I couldn?t take much more and asked for the
epidural after 6 hours of natural labor. Got the epi @ 9:15 pm. That was
the day of the full moon and the hospital was packed and luckily I was
the first stop on the anesthesiologists long list. I could still feel my
legs but had no pain. I wanted to try it naturally, but looking back I
don?t regret getting the epi. By 10 pm I was still a 6, so they broke my
water at 10:30. They put a contraction monitor device up along my
placenta to see if ctx were strong enough to progress. They were not,
so the pitocin was started. DH commented that I looked like I was in the
Matrix, with all the wires/tubes coming out of me.
By 1:30 am I was 8 cm. By 2:15 I was 9 cm.
At 3:45 am it was time to push. I pushed for more than 2.5 hours. They had to give me oxygen because LO?s HB would decrease with each push. At about 2 hours, the in-house OB (not my on-call OB) started talking about vacuums and things because it had been so long, I was having trouble getting LO under the pelvic bone. She also thought the umbilical cord must be wrapped around LO?s neck because of the decrease in her heart rate. Turns out she was wrong and unnecessarily making me worried and I feared a c/s.
I pushed the button for a epi boost at this point...and nothing came out, the bag was empty! Perfect timing, but the anesthesiologist got there pretty quick. My OB arrived then. I said I wanted to try pushing while squatting. I didn?t think they would let me because of the epi, but I could still move my legs. That?s what did the trick and it was time to deliver. The nurses were like, ?oh, what a great idea mom has to squat!? Don?t they know that squatting opens the pelvis 30% bigger? They acted all surprised, but I shouldn?t have had to tell them.
Avery came out soon after, I actually got to help pull her out and onto my chest. DH cut the umbilical cord. She really is a great baby and we are so in love with her. The nurses said she is a natural at breastfeeding.
I had to get an episiotomy, 2 cuts, because I was about to tear in my urethra, I still tore a little near there. I wasn?t numb enough and I could feel the OB cutting. And I could feel her putting in the stitches, so they numbed me, but the 3 shots of lidocaine hurt almost worse than the stitches. Thankfully things are healing well.
Thanks for reading.
