fridge milk..?

I've been freezing milk in 5 ounce bags, so if I pump Monday morning and get 8 ounces, I freeze 5 and put the other 3 in the fridge, and Tuesday I pump and get 7 can I combine the extra 2 ounces with Monday's 3 ounces and freeze it with Monday's date on it? Basically I guess I'm asking how long can the BM be in the fridge before it has to be frozen or used within the refrigerated milk window?

I've looked everywhere online and all I can find are the guidlines for storing but nothing that answers about mixing different days milk or how long before you can't put milk from the fridge in the freezer so I'm curious if anyone here has that answer or had asked an LC or pedi?

  • You can mix different days, but make sure it's the same temperature first. If you add different temp milks they will curdle. (Or so I've heard.) Just put the freshly pumped milk in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before adding.

I would treat the combined milk as if it were as old as the oldest milk in there. I've heard you can keep milk in the fridge for 8 days, but I personally don't keep mine in the fridge longer than 3 before freezing.

  • Perfect! Thank you so much, exactly what I was looking for! I forget there are boards for just about everything on thebump!
  • i combine mine without letting it get to the same temp and ive never had it curdle or do anything to make it not usable.  i leave several six ounce containers in the fridge and then freeze the oldest as i add new to the fridge.  milk loses a little bit of it nutrients when frozen so i dont want to use the frozen unless i have to.

  • I mix different temperature milk too and have never had a problem with it.
  • IDK what milk bags you are using to freeze in. But the Lanisoh (sp?) bags I use have the milk guidelines on the back of the storage baggy so that if I have a blonde or mommy moment I can go refer to it. So far, I've used BM 5 days old and it still smelt fine. Frozen milk.. Not so much I can barely make it 12 hours after it is fully defrosted it smells FUNKY.
