did you carry your older lo while pregnant?

did they weigh a lot, did it cause problems during your pregnancy?

Re: did you carry your older lo while pregnant?

  • Overdue and still carrying DD. I am a sahm and she is snuggle bug who loves to be held. She weighs 22lbs. No issue from carrying her and I am really small, four feet eleven inches tall.

  • DS is coming up on 24lbs and I'm still carrying him quite a bit. He's in an attachment phase right now and loves his snuggles. If my arms are tired or I'm trying to do something I'll pop him in the Ergo and no problems so far. Oh, front carries are almost out now, it's a bit squishy on my belly but hip and back carries are fine.

  • I carried DS1 until the end of my second pregnancy without any issues other than a sore back from time to time. He was/is pretty light (25lb) but I'm also petite.

  • Think about this question. Do you have any choice but to pick up your child? Of course not. Everyone picks up their LO, and no one is injured by it.

  • Yes, I still them both.  My DS is 37 lbs and my DD is 29 lbs.  No problems so far, but my back does hurt when I'm holding one of them so it normally doesn't last long.

  • My DD is 19lbs and I pick her up 1,000 times a day. I'm a SAHM so it's unavoidable. No problems so far and I plan on picking her up until the minute I leave for the hospital. My dr doesn't see any issues either.

  • I just found out I am pregnant so it is still very early and I was actually wondering the same thing. My DD is 22 lbs and I am carrying her around but wasn't sure if I would be able to as I get bigger.

  • yup, I dont see any other way to do it. especially if you stay at home and your husband works a lot. DS at 2.5 is still having a hard time understanding that I cant carry him if I have DD in my arms, at 18 months or less I can't imagine how I wouldve  explained that to him. Plus he ran away from me a lot, so carrying him was easier than running.

  • DD#1 no being that she's in the 30+lb area and I'm small and clumbsy so that wouldn't have worked out well and doesn't now.  DD#2 is just at 18lbs maybe almost 20 by now, but she isn't hat heavy and as long as it's just her I'm ok so far.

DH fusses about it, but being that she's only 11 months old what do you want me to do especially when you aren't here just let her cry on the floor b/c I "shouldn't" pick her up yea right..

  • there are times I have no choice - I just try to be conscious of lifting him with my knees instead of straining my back, and when I can put him down I do.  He is 27lbs and 32'' at 18 months and I've carried him kicking and screaming before .. you do what you have to do.

  • indeed. #1 was only 5 months when i got ku with #2. i carried her till the end.

  • DD is around 26lbs, and I SAH and carry her all day.

That being said, it is getting fairly uncomfortable, so I find myself putting her down fairly quickly. I get some really nasty BH if I try to carry her around just for the sake of carrying her.

So, uncomfortable... but not the end of the world.

DS was 32 lbs when DD was born. Carried him every day. Lifted him everyday.

Of course my back hurt some days more than others, but I never had a choice. I was home & he needed snuggling, put in this crib, etc.

  • I carried her pretty much to the end.  She was a late walker, so I had to!  She was about 20 pounds when DS was born, and no it didn't cause any problems during my pregnancy.

  • I still carry my 26 lb DS every single day.

I've been having him walk more and more to promote his independence, but he's definitely still carried. My belly is getting in the way, but you find a way to work around it. No issues whatsoever.

  • DS is ~25 lbs and yes, I'm still picking him up frequently. However, I have been encouraging him to walk on his own as much as possible, even if it means crying fits, if we're at home so that he gets used to not always getting picked up when he wants. He's tall (97th percentile) so it's actually his length that gets most cumbersome coupled with the fact that he doesn't "hang on" when being carried--he turns all of the way facing forward with both arms in front and just kind of lets his legs hang, very annoying.

  • I just had my baby last week....and carried my DD up until I left the house for the hospital.  She weighs about 29 lbs.  I did have the same fear early on in pregnancy and asked my OB.. he said that only risk was if I hurt MYSELF.. not my baby.. like by throwing out my back or something... but no problems.. NOW since my csection.. it's another story.. I've lifted her twice (both WITHOUT thinking.. maternal instinct to pick her up when she came to the hospital to see me... I was on painkillers and forgot!).. Aggh... I'm not supposed to lift her.. but finding it really difficult.

  • My son weighed 27 lbs when I got pregnant again and I since he didn't start walking until he was 15 months I carried him around the entire pregnancy. He weighed 30 lbs when she was born.
  • I have a bad back and a bum hip which act up really bad when I'm pregnant. I was surprised at how early it happened with this one (it was actually what made me wonder if I was pregnant). and I've had to make some adjustments when carrying my DD (she's 22lbs at 9mos). Sometimes I have to put her in the umbrella stroller to run errands rather than carrying her into places (like at the Y for swim class or if we need to quick run into the store for something). DH usually carries her when we're out together, but he's been doing that from the get go. She's a daddy's girl anyway.

  • He's not walking yet, and doubt he will anytime soon so I have to carry him all the time. He's 23lbs, has not caused any issues. According to my Dr. lifting can cause problems such as injuring your back but it wont hurt the pregnancy.

  • Yep.

I remember at 38 weeks pregnant, I carried my screaming, tantruming 90% 2- year old toddler out of a toy store : )  Fun times!

  • Yup. I tried redirecting and it worked sometimes. A lot of times, though, I had to just carry him. I could usually then put him down after a couple of minutes by showing him something he's like to do off of me: coloring, a snack, etc.

No problems but of course it got more difficult towards the end of the pregnancy. This is when I would spend more time on the floor playing with him: 1) so Iwould have to carry him 2) it forced me to stop what I was doing and relax.

  • So far yes with no problems. He is 27lb.
