Parenting after 35

What's with the crying?

DS is going through a phase of waking up several times at night and at least once during nap time - screaming! Crying inconsolably and  scrunching his little face up like it's the end of the world.

I would say it's because of his cold, but his mood is fine when he's awake. What gives?

Re: What's with the crying?

  • Ugh, T did that too for several weeks.  The only thing we could figure is that she was having nightmares :(  We tried everything - cuddling her and rocking back to sleep, popping in and comforting and then leaving again and finally resorted to bringing her into our bed.  Nothing worked :(  the only thing we changed is that we turned her monitor around so the light wasn't pointed at her crib.  Either that did the trick or she just passed through the phase.  Sorry to be no help at all, but thought it might comfort you to know you're not alone!

  • I don't know... only time Aaron's done anything similar is when he was teething. Does M have all his 2 year molars?

I think so, but I'm not sure. I thought they all came in a while back but he has been suspiciously drooly lately. Hmmmm... and crap!

He's still in our roomEmbarrassed, so it's pitch black when he wakes in the middle of the night. And nothing's different during naps.

And just knowing I'm not alone is a big help.

  • I know Charlie's younger, but he's been dealing with this too.  I think for him it's a combo of teething and night terrors. :(

  • DD has gone through at least one phase like this as well.  We asked the pedi and they said nightmares or night terrors are not uncommon and just to try to soothe her back to sleep.  We could tell she wasn't really awake, and our efforts to calm her down often woke her up and she would eventually calm down.
    DD1 is 3, DD2 is 1.
  • Looks like night terrors to me. If you google it you will see how they explain the difference between this and nightmares. It has something to do with brain growth and change of sleep cycles. There is not much you can do about them. J. used to have them practically every day, but they seem to go away with age. He still gets them, but very seldom.

  • I think that's what Adrian is having lately too. For a couple of days he's been crying out suddenly at night, and then he goes right back to sleep. It's like he's having a bad dream or something. That or his 2 yr molars are coming in. Or both. It's always something, huh?
