Potty Training this weekend...help!

I think I've read enough to get the basics on the 3-day thing. Tell me if I've got anything wrong:

- put her in big girl panties and tell her not to wet them and to tell me when she needs to go

- remind her often to tell me when she needs to go

- make a big deal of cleaning up her accidents and make her help (but don't really scold her)

- try to get her to sit on the potty every hour or so (???)

- get really excited if/when she actually goes in the potty

Is that pretty much the gist of it? Any tips for a kid that sits happily on the potty for 2 seconds anytime, but then jumps off and runs, and throws a total fit if I try to get her back on the pot? The only thing that's worked so far is giving her a popsicle and she'll sit there and eat it (sat prob 20 mins & never peed)..but I can't give her a popsicle every time, and don't really want to get her in the habit of snacking in the john.

And any great pee-cleaning tips? I have a feeling I'm going to be doing a lot of it.

  • That's pretty much the gist except for the sit on the potty every hour thing. The 3 day boot camp method has no time interval attached--it focuses more on teaching them to tell YOU when they need to go. And like you said, you're not supposed to  ask them if they need to go, rather remind them to tell you when they need to go (which is really asking them if they need to go, but makes them feel like they're in control). Instead of telling her not to wet the undies, it says to remind them to keep them clean and dry.

We had great success with this method. Day one was pretty rough--we had several accidents, but by day three she had none. It ended up being way easier than I thought it would. Good luck!

The only rewards we used were stickers & mini m&m's, and those were only if she actually went. If she told us she didn't need to go, we wouldn't make her sit there. For us it was best to put the trust in her that if she said she didn't need to go, we wouldnt' push the issue. If she had an accident, we wouldn't act upset with her, just say 'Oh no, Holly. Remember, we have to keep our undies clean and dry. Let's clean up," and have her help us clean up. Eventually it clicked that it wasn't fun to piss her pants, and that it took more time away from playing to clean up than it did to go to the potty, so she might as well let us know when she needed to go. hehe.

We used our Spot-Bot carpet cleaner, and some oxy-clean pet accident cleaner (both left over from when we had a dog..hehe). Thankfully, most of her accidents seemed to be on the vinyl or hardwood floor, not the carpet. We also had her sit on a towel on our laps if she wanted to sit on the couch. We both got peed upon. But better than cleaning the couch, we figured. :-)

Yeah...the popsicle was way more a bribe than a reward. The only time that kid sits still is when she's eating.

  • We did the 3 day method, too. It took longer than 3 days, but worked. We put her in leggings over the big girl underwear. . .that way she feels wet and gross with an accident (and it catches more of the pee). We used sticker charts and she loved that. We didn't put her on the pot every hour, we asked her a ton and said, "tell mommy when you have to potty." We watched her closely and if she got the look, we'd put her on the potty.

It's a frustrating process, lots of laundry and clean ups, but worth it. She'll get it. GL!
