Re: What is the rule on red meat? Medium-well??
Most reading I have done says "Well" is the only why to eat it during pregnancy. Personally, I believe that if the product is coming from a well established/trusted restraunt then you should order it as you prefer.
Depending on the cut, I have been ordering either medium or medium rare.
I'm not big on most of the "rules" I've been eating my steak meduim rare all along.
So sue me.
Steaks can be eaten any way except rare. As long as the outside is cooked, the potential for EColi is gone. This is b/c any cutting done that can contaminate the meat would only be able to contaminate the outside (as the inside is untouched)Ground beef is a different story. B/C it's ground up, you have to cook it all the way through to cut your risk. I like my steaks medium rare and have been eating them that way all pregnancy. Did with my last one, too. Enjoy!
This is me exactly!!
And if you are going to a nice steakhouse I wouldn't worry about the food having been sitting out or stored at improper temperatures. I'd enjoy your medium steak!
Then again I'm one of the opinion that if you're eating a steak well done you might as well be eating beef jerkey.
Ditto. Medium or medium-rare. Sorry, kid, but Mommy doesn't eat shoe leather.

DD: 5/22/14 | 9 lb 9 oz, 21.5 in
This, but I would skip the tartare.
It's not just E. coli you have to worry about. Undercooked steak does put you at risk for toxoplasmosis, the disease that people often associate with owning a cat. Cattle grazing on toxo-contaminated pastures/feed can have the parasitic cysts embedded in the muscle tissue. According to USDA, meat should be cooked to min internal temp of 145 F to eliminate the possibility of transmission. Not exactly sure how precisely that translates to doneness, but I think that means at least a medium, so a little pink is ok.
I order anything with ground beef medium well, pregnant or not. Both times I've gotten food poisoning, it was due to a medium burger.
That said, I eat sushi while pregnant - I say don't ruin your steak, order it medium/medium-rare.
Typically I order my steak medium but have been ordering it medium well while pregnant.
If it is something like ground beef, I would want it well done. However I try not to eat ground beef so this does not come up too often.
