VBAC

Frustrated w/ new provider search

We have decided that we will not be going to back to my old O.B. for this pregnancy. I have a consult at a free standing birth center next week and I tried to make a consult with the O.B./practice, who practices at the VBAC friendly hospital, that my local ICAN group referred me to. Apparently the O.B.'s in the practice "don't do consults because they are so popular". So I've booked a 8 week ultrasound and 1st visit/exam with the O.B. but will first see how the birth center consultation goes.

I'm irritated that the only way I can get in front of this O.B. is to get an internal exam. I need the piece of mind though that I chose from the two best options I have. But, I also feel like I'm just not up to dealing with the bureaucracy of a giant O.B's office even if they have a great VBAC record. As a consumer this is very off putting but obviously there are a myriad of other factors to consider. I'm also trying to present both sides of the equation to DH which will be difficult unless I hold out on making a decision until after seeing the O.B.

WDYT? Should I just be patient and wait to see the O.B. even if the B.C. consult goes well? I doubt if I would even have the time to ask/grill the O.B after she goes through all the 1st appt. exam/info speal. Do you think I should tell the B.C. that I am taking the decision very seriously and therefore cannot commit to anything until I've met with the O.B.?

Re: Frustrated w/ new provider search

  • The fact that they don't do consults does suggest that they are very busy.  But I would still go and meet them.  And definitely be up front with the birth center.  They will certainly understand that you are looking into all of your options and should be supportive of that.  I interviewed a midwife and an OB for mine prior to choosing the midwife and they both knew I was looking into both options.  Unfortunately the freestanding birth center here didn't take VBACs or I would have chosen them, I think.

It's frustrating but good luck with your choice!  It really should be easier for us but that's just not the way it is now.

  • I think in the long run you'll be very glad you explored both options, even if it is a pain. I interviewed 4 providers early on, and while it was tiring, it was time well spent. I feel great knowing I did a thorough search and identified the best option for me.

  • Also, I think if they're too busy to answer questions at any appt, it is a good reason to keep looking. I love that my midwife appts are an hour long and I can ask anything I want and not feel rushed.

  • That's the way it is with most of the MW or OB offices around here.  Usually what you do is you just make an appt with them.

For my first MW appt, she definitely had a ton of time to answer my questions and I had a HUGE list.  So I would just be upfront in the beginning of the appt, and say "hey, I have a lot of things I want to ask."  So that they know that you are not wanting to rush.  If they still rush you, they are probably not the right provider.

But yeah, I would keep the appt with the OB just to check it out.  Like I said, that's definitely the norm in my area.
