Baptism gift as a godparent?

My husband (who is jewish) was asked to be a godparent to his friend's son (who is Catholic and Filipino).  He is super honored, really excited, we're just at a bit of a loss as to what to give as a godparent?  Any thoughts?  Advice is much appreciated!

Re: Baptism gift as a godparent?

  • Don't feel pressured.  Neither of Q's godparents gave him a gift (and I don't recall giving one when I was a godparent).  A bible or book of bible stories is customary but cash is always good.

  • Savings bond...donation to a charity in the baby's honor...a special book or momento type of gift.

Ok, I just went through this!  I was asked (Lutheran, kids and DH are Jewish) to be godmother to my BFF's daughter (Catholic- and the godfather is Catholic).  I wound up getting her a plaque/sign for her room with a "blessing" from me.  This quote from A.A. Milne,

?Promise me you'll always remember: You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. Christopher Robin to Pooh?

I wanted something to remind her of me (they live 2000 miles away) every day, that worked with all of our religions, and that I truly wanted her to know and understand.  I found an artist on Etsy.

That is FANTASTIC!!!  Thank you so much for the idea!

  • In our family (we're Catholic), the Godparents typically give a nicer gift. DS got a St. Christopher necklace for his, and we've given saint or cross necklaces for nieces and nephews. I like the idea of the saint pendants, b/c they are not an obvious religious symbol, but still something special.

  • I have a baptism coming up in September.  I am going back to Etsy - they are awesome.  My daughter was given a baptism bowl from there (a shop called clareyclayworks) and I love it (more that the sea of bibles and crosses she got!)

We used it in the ceremony to christen her - and now it hangs on her wall.  Just beautiful:

I also love a shop that makes little saint charms - can't think of the name but i will check and repost.  Super cute if the kid has a saint name!

  • EJ's godmother gave him the gift of being there...she bought plane tickets to come be there which was enough for us.  She also made him a cross-stitch of his birth information.  It is hanging in his room, it is gorgeous.

EJ's godfather gave him a Giants jersey (with the name and number, which is soooo cool) and promised to take him to a game when he is old enough.

Frankly, I think a godparent needs to find what is their own thing that they can share with the child.  My sister is artistic and a seamstress so she did that and my BIL is a Giants fanatic (season ticket holder, the works) so he wants to share that gift with him.

So what is your DH's thing?  What can he share and teach his new godson? =)
