Pregnant after IF

Passed my GTT! But am anemic.. Suggestions?

So I passed my 1 hr "with flying colors" but my NP said Im anemic. My OB wasnt overly concerned since I tended to be anemic pre pg but Im wondering what I can do to help the situation without taking an iron supplement (I deal with enough constipation :( ) My PNV has extra iron and I eat a lot of oatmeal, fruits and veggies and vitamin C. Do you ladies have any other suggestions? TIA!

  • I have the same problem. I am slightly anemic. I asked my Dr if there was anything that I could add to my diet other then taking the pills and she said that she would feel more comfortable if I took the pills to ensure I was getting enough Iron everyday. I would ask your Dr

  • Congrats on passing! That's great! I have the same issue with anemia and was told there wasn't really a lot I could do beyond eating iron-rich foods (which you already are) and continuing to take my PNVs :/

  • She made me take an Iron pill on top of my PNV....add a little colace and I tell you I feel terrible taking so many meds while pregnant!

    Glad you passed GTT!

  • i have to take an iron pill on top of my PNV.

if you decide to take iron, just be sure to take it an hour before or after having dairy foods or anything with calcium in it. calcium inhibits iron absorption.

i take an iron pill called Slow FE - it hasn't caused any constipation (and i've had constipation issues most of my PG). it's been pretty easy on my system.

  • hooray on passing, but sorry you're anemic! I know my sister has been her whole pregnancy and his been just eating iron-rich foods.

  • I take Vitron C and I have no constipation problems. I also eat a lot of spinach, beans, and nuts. But my red meat intake is down, since I prefer my beef medium rare:) If you can stomach it, liver is also rich in iron. I love liver pate with toast:)

  • I am in the same boat. My doctor is having me take 1 iron supplement everyday. In addition, I am trying to eat more iron-rich foods, but the doctor wanted me to definitely take the supplement. I have just been making sure I eat plenty of fiber and take stool softeners with the iron.
