Trouble TTC

First RE appointment tomorrow...

Why am I so nervous? I guess I am afraid I am going to walk in there and he's going to say... Sorry, you will never have a baby! :(

What was your first RE appointment like? Were you nervous? Did you feel better afterwards? I am thinking up all of the questions I need to ask.. I am just hoping I will get some answers!

Also.. will the RE address DH's low morphology or just my issues? Should we also be seeing a urologist to find out what DH can do, or should RE be able to help?

Re: First RE appointment tomorrow...

  • Oh!  Just relax, I'm sure things will be okay... Obviously easier said than done -- I'm already nervous for my first RE appointment and it's not for another 12 days lol....

Keep us posted, and good luck!

  • We did a lot of paperwork and talked a long time with the RE. She spent almost 3 hours with us and we were there for almost 4 hours altogether. She went over everything we brought with us (my charts, dh's SA results) and then after looking over my hsg results she actually did an u/s right then and there. She asked us what we were comfortable with treatment wise and then told us what she would suggest we start with. Then she went ahead and had dh do another SA since it had been a few months since his first by that point. And we had bloodwork done.

DH had really low morph numbers and she didn't even blink an eye. She was more concerned with count/volume and motility.

I think most people end up doing a lot of paperwork, going over what's already been tested, and tentatively discuss more tests and treatments.

  • I had my first RE appointment in July of 2011 and I felt a thousand times better about things after I left. Our doc had us send all of our files from my OBGYN and TONS of paperwork ahead of time, so he could review it. We spoke in his office for about 45 minutes and came up with a plan for treatment and getting me pregnant.

He did address my husband's semen analysis issues as well as my ovulation. Your RE will tell you if he needs to see a urologist. In my case, my husband had morph of 1% when the RE ordered the SA, but that was because there were tons of white blood cells (infection), so they put him on an antibiotic, and morph has been increasing since then.As for me, the RE ordered an HSG and Day 3 bloodwork. He did an ultrasound in the office that day.

Our plan is to start with IUI, with injectable meds for 3 cycles. We start later this month! Yay!

Good luck today. It will be great.

  • My first RE visit was short.  He just reviewed my file and then ordered some blood work and U/S.  He also ordered an SA for my DH.  When we got the results of the SA he did address the numbers and everything was good but the Morphology was low and the second time it was 0.  He said there is nothing you can really do for Morphology when it is that low or in general if there is nothing causing it like infections.  Even though the other numbers are high, he recommended going straight to IVF.  Everything for me checked out fine.  So just be ready for IVF as your only possiblity if the morphology doesn't get better.  It is less then 5% chance that you will get KU on your own and the number decreases as the morphology % decreases.

So in summary, she will address his results as well as yours and since you have them already will probably do it in the first visit.  It is a relief though to have answers and a plan so don't be worried.

  • My first RE appointment was about 2 and a half hours but that's because it happened to be on cd3 so we were able to do baseline u/s and b/w too.  As for sitting down with RE himself, it was great.  He talked throught our paper work, my HSG and DH's S/A which was the main issue as being MFI Dx.  He explained that he felt very strongly that we'd be able to get KU within four IUIs (we've now done two).  He wanted us first do wait three months while DH started on vitamins, then just do clomid + IUI.  DH was really happy because he was really fearful and distrusting that we'd walk in and the RE would say "only thing to possibly get you KU is IVF".  Sadly with our situation it's been more than one year since that first appointment but if I had great IF coverage with insurance I think I'd be PG right now.  I was not nervous going in, but I was happier going out.

  • My first RE appt was pretty long - about 3 hours.  We talked for an hour - went over medical history, TTC history, etc.  I was CD3 so I got bloddwork done.  Then he did an internal u/s - found a cyst and septum so then we discussed what the next steps were with that.

I was nervous going in as well - but even though he found 2 big issues I felt realy good leaving there.  Like I was finally making some progress and getting answers.

    Good luck!!

  • I was extremely nervous but it was rather unemotional.  We went over test results, he gave us a lot of statistics along with a plan of treatment and at the end I felt a lot better than I did coming in.  I have to say, there's none of that left 3 months and 2 IUI's later, but it was nice to have some info and a game plan.
