Food Allergy

Help me fatten up my baby!

I know I've posted this somewhere on thebump before about how small my DD is and she is gaining, but i need ideas for allergy free high calorie foods. I put Earth's Best butter on her food, meat, rice products, avocado and oils...

Any suggestions would be great!  She's been to a nutrionist and vitamin levels are ok except she is slightly anemic and they are concerned about her weight.

I mean she is 15 months and 12 month pants are falling down on her  :(

Re: Help me fatten up my baby!

  • I swear by Duocal. It is a powder supplement and can be ordered without a script thru your pharmacy. We add it to DD's Elecare, but I think you could add it to any liquid or even cook with it. It is the only thing that has saved my daughter from needing an NG tube. Consult your dr or nutritionist to know how much can be given to your child. You could also try vanilla Elecare mixed to 30/kcal. Good luck. My 19 mos old is 19 lbs and can comfortably wear Carter's 3mos onesies. =(

  • You've been through this too... a little scary right, when you hear about how plump some other babies are and that fat is needed for brain development. ahhh...

Can I ask, what is an NG tube?  The nutritionist suggested today a powder we can put in her food, but to wait before we go that route. Not sure why we would wait? She said it's carbohydrates and fat powder.

What are typical meals for your LO? I assumue she has allergies? My DD is allergic to egg, milk, peanut, tree nut and shelfish.

  • We are also HUGE fans of Duocal, it has been the only thing that has helped DS gain weight steadily. We add it to a lot of things, juice, applesauce, DF yogurt, pretty much anything you want. There is also a drink called EO28 Splash (I think,anways...) it is high is calories & some kids like the flavors, unfortunately DS did not. He is allergic to Dairy, eggs, beef, gluten, sesame, tree nuts & oats so these restrictions definitely make things complicated! We add olive oil to everything, as well as DF butter. You can try hummus too, it has a lot of good fats in it. DS LOVES French fries so we definitely take advantage of that & offer them a couple of times a week! If your kiddo can handle beef, I would offer full fat beef hot dogs (Hebrew national are a great brand w/o a bunch of fillers), ground beef, bacon & sausages. However, the Duocal is the easiest way to slip in extra calories to foods that are generally pretty low cal. Good luck & I hope those suggestions help!

  • I swear by avocados! they are such a healthy and good will fatten you up (the healthy way) my son eats avocado (guacamole style) every day.. anywhere between half to a full avocado.  i swear that is the only reason he doesn't have weight issues.

i also put olive oil and special butter on everything.

  • An NG tube is a nasogastric feeding tube that is inserted through the nose into the stomach. Due to reflux and other GI issues, my daughter is not able to take in the amount of calories she needs. She can't (and won't) eat large volumes, so we have to add more calories to the small amount she does eat. She has feeding aversions, so she still gets 90% of her calories through her Elecare. She has milk/soy protein intolerance and, as far as we know, is allergic to 7 fruits and veggies. She eats pasta, MSPI-friendly bagels/breads, fresh fruits and veggies, brown rice, and that's really it. My DD was also becoming developmentally delayed due to malnutrition, but is now walking (running, actually) says many, many words, and her hair is growing quicker - all since increasing her Duocal. Also, check with your insurance company as ours is covered. I don't see any harm in starting it before your LO's development starts being affected. Feel free to pm me if you have any other questions! *on phone - sorry about formatting!

Avacados helped tremendously with our weight issues.  What kind of "milk" replacement is your LO getting?  We added condensed coconut milk to the rice milk for a huge calorie boost (like 500 cal/cup) and also added in a scoop of Vanilla Ellecare when he was at his worst/smallest and not eating much.  We would fry his safe hotdogs in the Earth's best butter and put olive oil on everything.  We made his oatmeal with the coconut milk instead of water.  I bought coconut kefir and mixed it with "naked" brand juice to make smoothies.  Read all of your labels for calorie content and always offer the fattiest option.  There are lots of ways to add- it just takes a lot of creativity.

  • Thank you for all of these suggestions!  I will read this again with DH this weekend. He's making chilli today for dinner and we will set aside some for DD and then spice ours up. She does like beans and meat so hopefully this will be good!

I will make her oatmeal with milk- good idea! I will also ask my pedi about Doucal. We do use avodcado but, she doesn't like the taste, so I used to hide it in yogurt- the only way she would eat it. I will go back to doing that.

Will keep you posted!  Love this board  :)

  • What is she allergic to? You mention needing something allergy free but then say you use butter on her food (milk=not allergy free). Is she gluten/wheat free? Issues with gluten/wheat can cause weight loss/inability to gain.

  • Avocados (DS would eat guacamole or whole avocados at every meal if offered), olive oil added to foods, Coconut milk yogurt (if coconut is ok for your LO).  My DS hasn't really ever been small but we've also been very determined to make sure he gets enough healthy fats since he can't have dairy and drinks a rather low-fat substitute (almond milk).

  • We put Duocal in our DD's Elecare also.  She is 19 months and 19 pounds and I was able to put one of #2's Newborn outfits on her.

  • Earth's Best is oil based, not milk. She doesn't have a wheat allergy. but, thanks for your input...
