Is my daycare telling "lies"?

DD is getting ready to move to the 3 year old room.  Today when we dropped her off so went to the 3's instead of the 2's like we normall do.  She also had her backpack that she always has (but has been staying in the 2's room when she visits the 3's).  Anyway, the teacher told us that it is state law that she can't have a backpack/bag in that room.  I can't find anything to that effect.  Are they just making that up b/c they dont' want to deal with them in that room?  It also made me wonder about some other things that they said were state law (like they had to throw out any clothes that were soiled with feces).  Anyone's daycare let their kid keep a backpack in the 3's room?

Re: Is my daycare telling "lies"?

  • At Mason's MDO, they don't have space for back packs in the rooms, so they always keep them outside lined up against the hall.  So I don't know anything about any "laws" saying they can't be in the room.

As far as the soiled clothes goes, Mason has been sent home several times over the last 2 years with soiled clothes because of diaper malfunctions.  They just put it in a plastic bag and stick it in his back pack.

Sounds like maybe your daycare is just lazy?   I don't know.  Hmmm....

  • My room is a 2-3 y/o room (I think), and they GAVE us a backpack (w/school logo) to bring with us for DS's stuff   It is hung on a hook in the classroom daily.  Not sure if this is continued in the next room up?

  • Can you say something like "oh, I guess I am not familiar with all of the state laws regarding a daycare.  Do you have something to provide me where I can find this info, so I can stay apprised?"

That way - she will either mumble something about not knowing where to find it, or maybe she can actually direct you where to go to check.

  • Our daycare has cubbies for each kid for necessities: spare clothes, blanket for nap, etc.  and there are hooks underneath the cubbie racks for coats, backpacks, etc.

They send soiled clothes home in plastic bags.

IMO, your daycare isn't being truthful or maybe they just don't know?

Years ago I worked as a pre-school admin.  I can't recall anything to that effect, that they can't have them.  All of our kids, infant through pre-k, either had their own cubbie or hook for backpacks.  I think there was some crazy rule about not sharing spaces, and I think they are supposed to be clearly marked with their names.  Maybe they didn't have a space set up yet, but that is still no excuse for not allowing it.  Talk to the administration.

As for the soiled clothing, that is a health code issue.  Basically all soiled clothing, diapers, etc. have to be in a sealed container.  That means that soiled clothing must be appropriately bagged.  There is no reason to throw them away.  Again, I would talk to administration.

  • All classrooms have cubbys for the kid's stuff.  They send soiled clothing home in a plastic bag.  Sometimes, if the clothing is really bad, they will rinse it out or even wash it first before sending it home.

    RED FLAG!

This! Our daycare has cubbies for each child's lunch and a separate cubby for pillow, blanket and napmat. They request we do not bring a backpack, but it's not forbbiden if there is a need for one. Soiled clothes are sent home in a large ziploc bag. Only once did his teacher tell me that she threw C's underwear away b/c it was a big poop accident and trying to rinse them out would have made more mess. I would talk to the director ASAP!

  • Ok, I clarified things when I picked her up by talking to the director.  The teacher misunderstood and it is a center policy on both issues.  For the backpacks they are going to be "phased out" due to parents leaving things in their kids backpacks (i.e. tylenol) that they shouldn't be bringing so they are eliminating all the hooks.  They do have cubbies for each kid and all of their personal stuff has to fit in there.  As for the soiled clothing, if it is urine or a solid poop they will do a quick rinse and put the panties in a plastic bag but it is really loose stool then they just toss the panties.

  • Those sound like reasonable policies but I would still be concerned that the teacher a) "misunderstood" and b) told you something pretty serious, i.e. against the law, without knowing if it's true or not. Teachers should be aware of school policy and why those policies are in place. Do I think this means you should pull A out of that school? No. But I would certainly be watching with a very critical eye going forward.
