how big is your house?

Just out of curiousity-dh and i are looking to buy a home after living in a rental townhouse for almost 2 years. DS is 5.5 mo old, and we'd like to have another when he is around 1.  We don't have a ton of stuff, since we've been in a rental townhouse, but I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how much space we would really need.  If you have 2+ kids, how many sq ft is your house, and does it feel "big enough" to you? Thanks!

Re: how big is your house?

  • Ours is about 2400 sq ft and it is plenty big for our family. 3 beds on main level and 2 downstairs. If I could change anything It would be to have the 3 beds on main level on a different level. Hard for naps during the day.

  • Our house is tiny. 1050sq st. In addition to 2 adults and 2 kids, we have 2 cats and 2 (55ish lb) dogs!

In about 2 years (when we are debt free) we plan on selling or building on (depending on the housing market). We want at least double the space.

  • Ours is like 1400 (plus an unfinished basement).  It's fine for the four of us, but it's not like it feels big.  Our bedrooms are small, but our living area is larger.

  • Our house is about 3400 sq feet, traditional two story. it has 4 beds and 2.5 baths. Each kid has their own room and we have one guest room for when family comes to visit. With the way our house is set-up, we opted to finish our basement about 2 years ago so all of the toys could be contained and not thrown all over our family.

  • Our house in tiny...940sq feet and we have a semi finished basement...we have 2 bedrooms and one bath...its DH"s childhood home though...eventually we would love to add on but since the market has tanked we lost alot of the value in our home :-(.

  • Our house is 2900 sq ft.  We bought big enough knowing we'd be staying in the house until we raised all our kids (we have one right now, but plan on having at least one more kid).  We have 4 bedrooms so each kid will have their own room and we still have a guest room.  We also have a loft, so that will work out great for when the kids are older.

  • Our condo is 1220 sf (2 adults, 1 baby and a small dog).  It's workable for now but we will definitely outgrow it with a second child.  We live in the middle of a big city though (Boston), so for now the smaller space is worth the convenience of having almost no commute.  When we look for our next house (we want to eventually have 3 kids) I won't look at anything under 2000 sf.

My husband's house growing up was huge (5000+ sf) and I wouldn't want to live in (or have to clean!) anything that big.  I think the 2000-3000 sf range would be ideal for us.

  • Our house is 1800 sq ft about. We have 3BR 1.5 Bath. I think it's fine for the 3 of us for right now but I would like another full bath by the time we have another. We plan to finish our basement (adding about 800 sq ft) and doing a 2 story addition which will add a master suite (adding about 1000 sq ft) Once all of that is done, our house will be perfect and we'll never move again!!
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • When our addition is done it will be 2640 sq ft.  We currently have 4 bed rooms will have 5 so every one has their own room. 2 baths, and will have 3.  One room will end up a guest room because one of our children moved out and the other two are 17 and 15 so in a few years they will be spreading their wings.  Then our house will seem too big.  We feel for a family of 6 its plenty big.  Our addition is a big family room and extra bed room.

  • I think the layout/configuation is as important as the size.  We have 2,400 sq. ft. but only 3 bedrooms.  When we have #2 we plan to have them share for a while but if/when that stops working we would lose our only guest room.

  • Our home is about 1800 sqft.  No basement, we are in FL.  3beds, 2 baths + a sitting room off the master.  Our sitting room is the nursery that we did gender neutral so we can use it for future children.  One bedroom is a dedicated office for my husband (he works full-time from home and this is a necessity).  Another bedroom is a guest room.  We will move A to the guest room in a "big girl's room" after her first birthday.  I think we could easily have 2 kids in this house, but our children would have to share a room.  We could even have 3 if the third is still in the nursery.  Once a 3rd kid is ready for his/her own room, it's time to move.  Of course, I'm not selling this house until we can make something off of it, so we'll just have to get cozy if necessary.  No room for expanding.

  • We have a little over 2000 sq ft including our finished basement. Two bedrooms upstairs and 2 down with 2.5 baths. We only have 1 LO now and 2 large dogs, but I think it would be plenty of space for another kid, however, I would prefer a different layout. We have a small living room upstairs in the open floor plan (living, kitchen, dining) and a family room downstairs in the finished basement with plenty of room to also make it a playroom for DD, but I don't like that we only have one other bedroom other than the master on the main floor, I would prefer when the kids are young to be on the same floor as the master I guess.
  • Wow!  Y'alls houses seem HUGE compared to mine!  Big Smile  Right now, we live on campus in family housing at DH's university.  Our old place was 575 SF.  We were constantly tripping over DS' stuff and when guests came, we had to set up a bed in our LR.  We moved to a 3 BR with 700 something SF.  The bedrooms are a little smaller, but it's an open layout, so it's so much more comfortable.  We don't plan on having another LO until DH graduates.  When we move, I'm looking for something with 4ish BRs at least, so we can have a guest room.  I don't want a super big house because that means I have more to clean and stay on top of, but since our family size is up in the air, who knows!
