Just out of curiousity-dh and i are looking to buy a home after living in a rental townhouse for almost 2 years. DS is 5.5 mo old, and we'd like to have another when he is around 1. We don't have a ton of stuff, since we've been in a rental townhouse, but I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how much space we would really need. If you have 2+ kids, how many sq ft is your house, and does it feel "big enough" to you? Thanks!
Re: how big is your house?
Ours is about 2400 sq ft and it is plenty big for our family. 3 beds on main level and 2 downstairs. If I could change anything It would be to have the 3 beds on main level on a different level. Hard for naps during the day.
Our house is tiny. 1050sq st. In addition to 2 adults and 2 kids, we have 2 cats and 2 (55ish lb) dogs!
In about 2 years (when we are debt free) we plan on selling or building on (depending on the housing market). We want at least double the space.
Our house is about 3400 sq feet, traditional two story. it has 4 beds and 2.5 baths. Each kid has their own room and we have one guest room for when family comes to visit. With the way our house is set-up, we opted to finish our basement about 2 years ago so all of the toys could be contained and not thrown all over our family.
Our condo is 1220 sf (2 adults, 1 baby and a small dog). It's workable for now but we will definitely outgrow it with a second child. We live in the middle of a big city though (Boston), so for now the smaller space is worth the convenience of having almost no commute. When we look for our next house (we want to eventually have 3 kids) I won't look at anything under 2000 sf.
My husband's house growing up was huge (5000+ sf) and I wouldn't want to live in (or have to clean!) anything that big. I think the 2000-3000 sf range would be ideal for us.
