Parenting after 35

Grandmother story

Ok I am new to this board and saw that it is slow so will give you a "laugh".  While taking my 13 year old niece and my 4 month old son to lunch a very nice lady talked about how cute my son was.  Of course I was beaming until she said - "Is he your grandson"?????????????  Seriously did she think the 13 year old was his mother.  I am 42 years old but feel like a kinda young looking 42.  At the very very least it would be questionable, which means keep your mouth shut.

Oh, I did my community service and she will stop at saying cute baby when she talks to future people :)

Re: Grandmother story

  • Oh wow, maybe she had poor eyes.

  • What did you say to her?

  • She likely didn't think the 13 yo was the mom.  She was likely just commenting on the baby because that's what people do...they comment on babies.

I myself, at 41 and pregnant, will be 42 when this one comes along.  The doctor who oversaw the g/s did a double take at my husband and myself, looked at the chart and said that we were young looking 40-year olds.  "Clean living" we always chortle back.  Of course, I thought he was being polite as I don't think we could be mistaken for anything more than mid/late 30s.

I have been absolutely mortifying myself with unwelcomed day-dreams about people asking if my LO is my grandson rather than my own child.  Worse...I'm having grandmother comment day-dreams about how old I will look when he graduates high-school.  LOL, I'm borrowing trouble, I guess.

  • That frightens me.  I just found ot 8/6/11 I was pregnant AGAIN.  I have a 17 and a 19 year old.... this was a surprise!  I will be 43 the same month the baby is born and my husband will be 53!  We are still in shock and trying to deal with the unexpected news.  I have worried about how I will I be when the baby is 10 years old.... a senior in high school..... Boy,  the Lord sure has a sense of humor.

We are just praying all goes well.

  • Considering the fact that most of my high school classmates ARE grandparents of children who are older than Charles, I don't get too phased by it anymore.

  • I can top that.  I was eating dinner with my 17-year-old nephew and my 15-month-old son.  A lady at the other table commented that my son looked just like his "father".  In his defense, my nephew has a full beard (grown men can not grow such facial hair) but the rest of him is baby face.  So either he looks old enough and I look young enough (I am 41) to be married or she thought I was the grandmother.

  • OMG... wow. Not sure I would have handled it so gracefully.  People can say the stupidest things without thinking..

  • I just cannot believe people assume anything anymore. I don't know if I would have handled that too well!

Things you just don?t assume & ask about unless you?re certain you already know the answer: pregnancy, children, grandchildren, relationship status, and education.

Three years ago at my middle sister?s baby shower, one of her friends (who I had never met before) asked me if I was pregnant too ?or are you just wearing one of those shirts?? I said ?I guess I?m just wearing one of those shirts,? & glared at her. She said ?Oh. Well, I wasn?t saying you were fat or anything.? I looked her right in the eyes & said ?uh yeah, ya did. Maybe unintentionally, but you did.?  I didn?t see her the rest of the shower.

  • Lol!  When I was pregnant and I went out with my 17 year old daughter they thought we were sisters.  Now they think she is the mom and I am the grandmom!  Where is the hair dye? I think my roots are showing!
