Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Quivering Lips at 13 months

My 13 month old DD lips have started quivering again. It is starting to happen a few times a day. I know this is normal at the newborn stage but I cannot find any information about it happening at the toddler stage. Anyone else notice this? Should I be concerned?

Re: Quivering Lips at 13 months

  • Is it just the lower lip, like she is cold or going to cry?  It looks like her chin is quivering? Does it happen at all different times of day? Has it gone on since she was born?  If yes, then I may have an answer for you.

There is something called hereditary geniospasm, which is a quivering chin.  It is very rare but completely harmless!! I know, because I have it and so does my son :)  If this sounds like what it is, let me know.

  • Yeah, that what it sounds like. I'm going to research it some more. Thanks!
  • If that is what it is, there is not much research on it.  The studies they have done have found only about 20-30 family lines with it (in my entire life, I have never met anyone else with it, except for my son). And since it is completely harmless, people don't spend much time on it.

My chin has quivered since I was a newborn.  It still does it almost daily, though I hardly notice it anymore.  It can do it when I am nervous, upset, stressed, excited, or for no apparent reason.  When it shakes a lot, it is annoying, but it doesn't hurt or anything.  I did get teased when I was little, so my parents took me to a doctor for it, but they had no idea what it was.  It wasn't until a few years ago that I even thought to look it up online.  I guess I wasn't officially "diagnosed,"  but the description of the symptoms fits me perfectly.  There isn't much that can be done for it, but apparently Botox injections help (I can't stand needles, so I've never tried.)

Though it is hereditary, I was the first in my family to have it  During my first  pregnancy, I was curious to see if my baby would have it.  Sure enough, within minutes of him being born, his chin started quivering.  Now, I am curious to see if my second has it, too.

I still get questions about it (are you cold? are you upset? are you going to cry? why does it do that?) but it doesn't bother me anymore.  Mostly little kids are curious about it.  I have even used it as an example with my students as a lesson in heredity, and they think it is pretty cool!

Of course, talk to the pediatrician if you are concerned, but it is possible that this is all it is.
