Breastfeeding

Please share your breastfeeding schedule...

DS is now 1 week old. His weight gain has been good and my supply seems to be good. The Ped thought that I could try putting him on more of a schedule now, since he is still nursing every 1-2 hours (which means very little sleep for mom).

I am trying to get him to sleep better at night.

Any tips?

Also this is probably a dumb FTM questions, but should I be trying to keep him a wake to play, or should he just be eating and sleeping at this point?

This will be a post and run, as I gotta go feed him again...lol!

Thanks!

  • There's really no way to put a 1 week old on a schedule. Think about it. He wakes up hungry. Would you rather feed him or listen to him cry? Those are your choices, and it's kind of cruel to let a newborn go hungry.

It gets better on its own but it takes time.  And yes, all a newborn does is eat and sleep. Totally normal.

I thought it was strange that the ped recomended that. He is not our regular ped. We just saw him because he was the only one available for our 1st weight check appointment that we scheduled last minute.

  • Some doctors are nuts. That's really all I can tell you.

We ended up cosleeping just so I could get some sleep. It helped a lot. If you end up trying it, just set up a safe sleep space. https://www.askdrsears.com/topics/sleep-problems/co-sleeping-yes-no-sometimes

  • There is absolutely no way to put a 1 week old on a schedule and its actually a supremely bad idea as it can lead to low supply.  Watch your baby not the clock.

  • Those first few weeks are going to be "baby schedule" not "your schedule". If he's hungry, feed him.  If he's tired, let him sleep.  Unfortunately, you getting no sleep comes with the mommy territory.  GL!
