Two Under 2

Help me teach my LO to sleep independently

We are currently expecting baby #2 (due march). Well, my son naps and all but I usually have to hold him and kind of bounce him in my lap a little for him to do so. I know it is not ideal, but it is what has been working for us. Now that we have another on the way I know it is super important that he learn how to put himself down on his own befor march. We tried Ferberizing for naps and sleep in desperation but my son gets MUCH too worked up. I could use any advice ! Please!!!! Thank u

Re: Help me teach my LO to sleep independently

  • I know this may be taboo, but we have a pillow and small blanket in DD crib.  She was horrible sleeper and was so restless.  As soon as we put her down with a pillow and blanket, she sleeps 12 hours and rarely moves.  We are still able to use our angel care monitor with it, otherwise I'd be a lot more nervous doing it.

  • A blanket and a pillow? Interesting. What size pillow? Is it under just her head or do you prop her up on it?

I did ferber/CIO, and then Silvie got sick and was waking up every 2 hours or so, so all our work has gone down the drain. I hate hearing her cry so I'm dreading doing it again, but the pedi recommended to. Ugh.

  • Around this age, I would put him in his crib tell him nite-nite (or nap-nap) and leave.  If he fussed, I would wait for around 5 minutes and go back in and soothe him.  I would NOT pick him up.  If he stood up or sat up, I would just lay him back down...rinse and repeat.  It only took around a week to get him to sleep on his own.  The longest I ever had to stay in his room was an hour.  I also got him one of those aquarium soothers he could turn on.

This method still works at 18 months, btw.

  • Stick with Ferber.. it will work.  Don't give up. Might take a night or two. Torture.. but he will fall asleep.

We started putting blankies and stuffed animals in our DDs crib when she was about 1.. she sleeps on her tummy with her face smushed up to bumpers... she's fine and just loves super soft things.. cuddly things.

My DD goes right to sleep... We do her bath.. she brushes her teeth.. we do the read books in her glider.. snuggle and talk about how it is time for bed.  I say "who's in the crib?".. (bear.. bunny, her baby doll...Dora doll, etc..) and then I say "who is going in the crib?" and she says "dette" (what she calls herself).

Seriously.. he'll be okay.. do it now before you have another baby.  We're so lucky that our DD sleeps from 7p-7a on her own without a fuss now that we have a newborn up every few hours.  Couldn't imagine what it would be like to have to rock her to sleep every night, too.
