When did LO transition from sippy to regular cup?

This week I was informed that DS daycare class are transitioning from sippy cups to regular grown up cups. DS is 16.5 months old...I think it's a bit early, but since he is my only child I could be wrong. I think part of me wants him to stay a baby as long as possible, which is probably why he still gets a bottle at night so I can hold and cuddle him. At what age did your LO switch from sippy/straw to regular cups?

Re: When did LO transition from sippy to regular cup?

  • My son turned 3 in July.  He is just recently over the last several months been occasionally using regular cups.  For the most part he mainly uses a straw sippy cup.   I don't have time for the messes a regular cup can make!  lol

  • DS quit using sippy cups on a regular basis about 4-5 months ago, so shortly after he turned 2.

  • DD is 4 and still uses a sippy cup with a straw.  I do give her normal cups (but she can only drink it with her meal at the dining table), when we're going places, there's definitely a lid to avoid spills!

  • DS just turned 4 and he'd be content to still use a sippy cup if we let him. We have had to "wean" him off them over the last few months, although he still asks for them occassionally. He was capable of drinking from a regular cup or a sports bottle type starting at about 2 1/2.
  • Honestly, we still use a sippy at home just b/c I don't want a mess.  He can drink out of a regular cup, but it alwasy seems to get knocked over or something when we do it, so I avoid it now!  I don't remember when he started it - b/c I really didn't even know he could do it until I saw him at the daycare table one day with the regular cup.
  • DS#2 started using a regular cup at school at 13 mos. They are very small but they only drink out of these at his school. It's good for their development and sense of accomplishment/independence. At home, both boys use straw cups anywhere but at the table. At dinner, they both (4.5 and 2 yo) use small plastic glasses.

It's never too early, to be honest. Most times, we don't allow our kids to do these things because we think they just aren't capable. Schools deal with a lot more kids and know what they can do. Keeping your son on a sippy won't keep him a baby, it'll just keep him acting like one, KWIM? Like I said, my 4yo still uses a straw cup on occasion, but drinking from a real cup is a skill they need to learn so let the school roll with it.

  • They can both use a regular cup. But they both drink from sippies around the house and in the car. DD also uses a sippy (spout or straw or sports bottle) at school, even in the 3yo room last year. They also drink from dixie cups sometimes, but I don't know how often they do that. I guess I just see it more as mess-prevention than holding them back.

  • We do a combo of both a home.  However, at school once they go to the 2 year old room, no more sippies.  They have small plastic cups there than all the kids use.
  • Mine transitioned at one year old except for night time.
