Babies on the Brain

When did you start table food?

DCP teacher suggested we start E on table food because he'll be moving up to the next room in a couple months.  It seems so early to me!! Am I just in denial?

  • You have to do what feels right to you, but we started at 5 months with baby led solids.  It worked well for us.

  • I think we started around 9 months with Oisin?  Once he started on the chuckier baby food, we started to give him actual food.  Can you get Pepperridge Farm bread?  We started him on this with a piece of cheese or a slice of ham.  It is super thin and really has no crust to speak of.

  • She mentioned a baby a month older than him eating mac&cheese already (not pureed or cut up or anything).

We tried BL a few times nut he wouldn't even touch the food lol

  • One of my friends did BLW around 6 months? Maybe 7. It didn't work all that well at first then she started sharing little bites of what she was eating and her little girl was suddenly interested. Maybe that could help get him interested in it?

    Good luck!

  • We mashed up, or used the food mill on what we were having and always offered it at dinner.  He loved all of it.  Seems to be the right time.

  • We started slow with solids because of DS's gagging and reflux issues.  Actual bits of food came around 8 months.  He had purees before then.

  • I started around 7 months, but with small amounts like some cooked squash or a small piece of banana. Amelia did really well and now she can chew up well cooked pastas and waffles too. Man! The Earth's Best blueberry waffles smell amazing when toasted!

  • Honestly from working at a daycare, the earlier they get used to table foods (at a safe age of course) the better.  Once they move up to a toddler room, they are pretty much expected to feed themselves with ratios of 1 to 6 one year olds in TN.  I would do my best to feed the ones who couldn't, but you can only do so much with 6 kids and you.

If they are started and good eaters early, it is one less thing to worry about.

  • We did BLW, so we started giving him table food at 7ish months.  We skipped cereal and purees.  He didn't get the hang of eating for a good 4-6 weeks, but now?  He eats more than Henry at every meal.
  • We started trying just before 9 months, but up until a week ago, the only finger food he could eat without gagging and vomiting was Puffs. However, barring a gag reflex like DS's, 9 months should be a good time to start!

One of DH's former CWs is having a hard time now because her son just turned one and won't eat finger foods and that's all they give him at his daycare. He's not gaining weight and was referred to a feeding specialist, so the sooner you start trying, the better!

  • We started with Puffs & Cheerios at 7 months, then started slowly with other finger foods - bananas, cooked apples, carrots, squash (I did homemade baby food, so I basically took what I had been making into baby food and cut it into chunks he could pick up).

  • About 3 weeks ago, we started giving him banana, avocado, bits of broccoli, and mashed potato.

    So, at about 7.5 mo.
