Help! Q's re: Induction tonight :)

Hi, all!

I'm getting induced tonight, very excited, blah blah blah.

I have two questions for BTDT moms who have been induced.  I KNOW it's different for everyone, but I'd like some ballpark answers, anyway:

1) How long from the time you recieved the first dose of PIT (I'm doing Cervidel the night before, if it matters) did it take to have the baby?  Just wondering when this kids birthday will be and how long the labor will likely last.

2) Do you feel the cervidel at all?  Like, will it start my contractions?

3) Everyone keeps telling me that I'm going to "need" the epidural because the contractions are much worse after having the PIT... is that true, in your experience? I wanted an all natural birth with no drugs, and now I'm trying to be realistic (although I'm not giving up on it).

Thanks in advance!  I may also post this on 0-3 to get more responses, too.

  • Also, I have GD and the baby was measuring at 7 and a half at 36 weeks.  Not sure if that matters, but just FYI.

  • i'm curious about the first two questions as well because I will be induced on monday if he doesn't come by then. i want my mom to be in the room with us for the birth but I'm trying to figure out when to have her come. She lives about an hour away from us. I don't want to her to come right at the beginning if it could be a long process. I would feel bad if she's sitting around with us for like 24 hours or more without being able to go home.
  • I was induced and I was supposed to get the cervadil but since I ended up dilating on my own I was just given the pitocin at 4:30 am and I had my son at 5:16 that afternoon. Seems like a long time but contractions didn't start to hurt until about 11 am and they REALLY hurt, it's more the fact that the contractions don't really end when you're on Pit., it's like one long contraction. The epidural was great for me, although not for everyone.

  • I had Cervadil at 10pm...started contractions and pain. 8am water was broken and Pitocin started. Not long after I had an epidural because the contractions were lasting up to 5-6 minutes with only a minute or two between them. I ended up with a c-section around 5pm because I never progressed past 3cm.

Bummer!  I'm sorry it sounds like it was painful for you... :(

Thanks! It was, but I have a friend who had cervadil, started some contractions, her water broke on her own, she had a low dose of pitocin just to keep things regular and had a fabulous birth with no epidural until she caved at 8cm. So it could go really well too. Everyone is different! Good luck!

  • Cervadil triggered my contractions and I ended up getting my epidural pretty early. After that is was smooth sailing and I rested throughout the day while my contractions did their work. I don't remember how much pitocin they used. When I could start really feeling things again it was time to push and that went quickly. Easy Peasy, wish they would let me do it this way again.

  • 1. I received PIT at around 8am and she was born at 8:58am. With my first though, I was given PIT in the late morning and I didn't have her til 5:17pm.

    2. I felt the Cervadil when they put it in, but not while it was in. Contractions started fairly quickly after that.

    3. I didn't get any PIT either time until after I got the epidural. I do have to say the Cervadil picked them up so much that it was pretty intense.
