BabyBjorn vs ErgoBaby?

We received a BabyBjorn at our baby shower on saturday, while it is nice, I had my heart set on the ErgoBaby.  Rec your baby carrier? :)

The carrier will mainly be for DH (and for myself once baby AJ gets bigger), as I will be using a sling for quite a while.

Thanks!

  • I have both, and I prefer the Ergo.

  • The Bjorn puts all of baby's weight on their crotch, and makes that weight hang off of you in a way that's not ergonomic for parent or baby.  The Ergo is much more ergonomic for everybody, but for a newborn I'd actually recommend either a Moby (for indoor use, they're hot) or a ring sling for outside.

It's hard to definitively say "this is the best carrier for you" because everybody has different needs and body shapes.  I'm one of the leaders of the Austin Babywearers and we have an extensive lending library and lots of experience recommending carriers for different needs, so if you're interested we could get you set up with something to try before you spend the money.  We have a meeting 10am Saturday at Baby Earth in Round Rock and another at 10:30am Tuesday at Cherrywood Coffeehouse.

  • The bjorn was fine when DD was tiny but once she started gaining weight it killed my back.

I have used both and I prefer the Ergo.  The Bjorn was fine when he was itty bitty, but after a while it hurt my back.  Also, they are supposedly not great for baby's posture or hips or something like that.  I can't remember.

Ditto.  I used the Bjorn until she was 12-13 pounds - after that it just hurt my back too much.  And I also heard that it is not great for their legs to dangle the way they do with the Bjorn.  With the Ergo, they sit up against you very naturally I believe, as if they are sitting on your hip.

  • I've also used both and definitely preferred the Ergo.  Not only did it seem like the Bjorn would be uncomfortable for the baby, it wasn't very comfortable for either DH or myself.  Also, DD never really felt secure in the Bjorn--almost like she was just dangling.  I've been very happy with our Ergo and have gotten lots of use out of it (still do).
