QUAD Screening Results- help

My OB just called with my results ( 2 days later) I guess I tested high for Downs, the nurse said this is very common and 9 times out 10 everything turns out fine but OMG I am in shock and scared.  How if 9 times out of 10 it's fine do they run a screening like this.  Has anyone had this happen where everything was fine or know of anyone.  I go to a specialist on Aug 23rd for more testing but how can I wait a week and a half.  How can I act like nothing is wrong when what if it is.  If anyone has any advice on this I would really appreciate it.  Thanks

Re: QUAD Screening Results- help

  • They test for markers, and the markers are not definitive. They just indicate the likelihood of something. That's why you get a ratio, and not a "yes or no" answer.

There is no way that this is not going to be scary. We're all here for you. And keep in mind that finding out the answers, as you are, is going to make sure that you have all the best resources available if your little one needs them.

And I'll say it again, we're all here for you! HUGS!

  • She didn't tell me, I asked and she said anything over what they think is high is considered to high

  • If you have had any bleeding or spotting, my OB said it can cause a false positive on the results.

Hopefully everything is OK.  Try not to worry too much since there is a large chance it is wrong and there is nothing you can do right now to change things.

    ((hugs))

  • It's not specific to the QUAD screen, but I'll tell you my experience from the NT scan since it's relevant.  When I had the scan done, the NT measured really high.  Well over the normal <3 or3.5 millimeter range.  Blood work was normal.  Because of the NT I was given poor odds for trisomy 18, told to definitely get amnio done...the genetic counselor acted like there was basically no way that the baby didn't have serious issues.

I freaked out for about a month waiting for the level II ultrasound, and I had scheduled an amnio to be done immediately afterwards, because we were expecting to see issues.

So we went and they did the ultrasound....and despite their best efforts, could not find anything at all wrong with the baby.   So I would say, try not to worry too much (yeah, I know this is easier said than done).  There is always SOME chance that something could be wrong.  Even a good amnio result isn't a guarantee that there are no issues, since it only checks for certain things.  If you don't have concrete reason to worry, try not to drive yourself crazy.  Wait and see what happens after your next round of testing, and you'll probably get some reassurance.

  • Thanks you ladies, I just googled like a mad women and a lot of people seem to get a positive result and go on to have a heathly baby.  I guess I just need to relax the next 12 days until my testing, I should probably call the new doctor and see just what kind of testing they are doing.  Trying to do the deep breathing so I don't stress myself and the baby out.

  • My NT results came back with a 1 in 5 chance for Downs, plus baby has a cystic hygroma, which raised our odds to over 60%. The doctor who administered the u/s (not my OB), and the genetic counselors made us feel like there was absolutely no hope, that even if the chromosome testing came back okay, we're still high risk for heart abnormalities and other genetic defects.

I had a CVS done 2 days later and all chromosomes look perfect. I've done carrier screening for 5 common genetic defects (cystic fibrosis, fragile x syndrome, etc) and all have come back negative. We're still waiting for results on detailed chromosome screening, and we're having a fetal EKG done sometime around 20 weeks.

My OB, who is amazing, tells us that with the test results we've gotten back so far, our chances of any problems are down to under 20%. Still higher than I'd like, but much better than before. And even if it is something, it could easily just be a minor heart murmur or something that's completely manageable.

I totally understand your fear and worry. I didn't think I was going to make it through the week between our NT scan and getting the CVS results. I hope everything works out for you guys.

  • My results from the Quad weren't elevated for Downs, but they were for neural tube defects.  Like you, I spent the next 12 days as a complete basket case, imagining the worst case scenario.  I went in for my Level 2 ultrasound today....Everything was perfect.  One of my other girlfriends tested high for Downs = perfect 3 year old boy.  Honestly, from everything I have heard / read, the Quad Screen just gives them the doctors a heads-up but is in no way a diagnosis.

I know it is so hard to do (beleive me!!) but just try to relax.  I would bet willing to bet that everything will turn out just fine for you!

  • I just got my QUAD screening results back yesterday.  The doctor said that we now have a high risk of 1 in 38 for Down Syndrome.  Before the screening we had a 1 in 95 chance.  I am trying to stay positive also, I know they say that most results come back fine.  We are getting an amnio next Wednesday and I could not be more scared.  I feel pretty awful about it.  People keep telling me that everything will be fine and I hope that it is for both you and I, but I understand how you feel.  There really isn't anything anyone can say to calm my worries at this point.  But it is just a waiting game now.  But know that you are not alone, I felt better after reading your post.  If you need someone to talk to, I totally understand where you are coming from and how you feel right now!  Hopefully everything will turn out fine for both of our babies!!!

  • In CA, anything over 1/200 gets marked as elevated risk. So, your risk might not be as high as you are worrying it is. Hang in there, I know first hand that waiting when you have something not ideal going on is miserable.

Good Luck at your Amnio, I really hope both our babies will be fine.  It's hard to stay on the Positive side but let's do it together!!  I have a level 2 ultrasound on the 23rd, feels like that is so far away.  Keep me posted, I'm here for you too!

  • The level 2 is fun!  You get to see so much more of the baby!  Staying positive sounds like a good idea!  Keep me posted as well, I am always here if you need to talk!
