Babies: 9 - 12 Months

9 mo old won't hold own bottle?

Anyone else have this problem? Tips? Just keep letting her try? She has to fidget with something while drinking (her clothes, hair, my hair, my clothes). When I do get her to hold it, it lasts 10 seconds and she startes playing with it and it leaks everywhere. But if I hold it, she finishes it, no problem.

  • Its really not a big deal if she holds her bottle.  My now 2 1/2 year old never held her own bottle.  It has nothing to do with anything developmentally or anything.

  • with kids i've cared for in the past i've had good luck helping them hold their own bottle. i would put their hands on the bottle and keep my hands on theirs to help them learn to do it themselves. definitely keep letting her try though, she'll do it for longer periods eventually!
  • Mine won't either?? She can but just won't??
  • DS doesn't do it very often. I just give it to him and let him play around with it until he gets the hang of it. Really, I love feeding him because now that he loves to move around all the time, it's some close bonding time! Smile

  • DD just started at 10 months.  I never tried to have her do it, she just took over one day.  She still wont hold it for her bedtime bottle though.
  • My nearly 11-month old won't hold her own bottle.  Totally can.  And daycare says she does it there.  I think she's figured out that if I have to hold her bottle, it's time that she gets to spend with me.  My 3-year-old held his bottle very early.  It's strange.  She's way more independent than he is in a lot of ways.  But, won't hold a bottle.  And won't take a sippy either - unless she's stealing his.  She CAN do both, but won't.
